DC Comics had been doing legacy and spin-off heroes for years, but it was still a relatively new thing for Marvel when characters like She-Hulk and Spider-Woman hit the stands. I think Marvel was wise to have the still be quite distinct from the heroes that inspired them, and not just in gender. Jennifer Walters retained her normal intelligence as She-Hulk and enjoyed the transformation, which was very different from Bruce Banner. Spider-Woman had very little to do with Spider-Man at all, indeed they only crossed paths a few times. She carved out her own path without having to become just an offshoot of an existing hero.
Spider-Woman and Wonder Girl first discovered their familial relationship back in STF #831...
Next....they fight Hydra? And I miss Spider-Woman's classic costume. The new one is horrible.
ReplyDeletehow about Doctor Strange and Extrano? They are similar and similar-looking.
ReplyDeleteSo, to keep the twins from being abducted by the Red Circle, Fly Man and Fly Girl separated them at SHIELD's urging? With Jessica being given to the Drews, and Donna to the Amazons?
ReplyDeleteI wish companies would not keep changing origins of characters. Now Donna Troy is a "weapon" developed by the Amazons.
ReplyDeleteSome writer gets an idea and then leaves not thinking of consequences but the future writers need to deal with it for a while (unless a certain writer who is just ignored because too weird) until the barnacles get so bad that the entire history needs to be rewritten.

But now she remembers her previous origin as well as her latest one... and her previous origin already involved all of the earlier ones, too, so essentially they've just added one more incarnation to the list.
Talking of walking continuity snarls, have you seen their latest approach to Hawkman?

I don't necessarily wish to speak for Glenn Host, but I get the feeling that this is exactly the kind of thing he was complaining about in the first place!
Besides, how many origins does one character need?
@Sonofjack: why not ask Power Girl? The next time her origin gets revised, they might as well name her "Ret Con-El!"
ReplyDeleteIs that Mafia or Maggia? Looks like Silvermane on the cover.

Ah, but which Power Girl? They've currently got at least two versions of Kara Zor-L flying around, i.e. the version who was the post-Flashpoint E-2's 'Supergirl' before she got stranded on DC's main Earth for several years (along with her friend Helena 'Robin'/'Huntress' Wayne; they've since returned home) and adopted the name 'Power Girl' there, and the version whom Harley Quinn has now met on several occasions who seems to be the pre-Flashpoint one although she denied having previously met Varrtox (as the pre-FP versin had done) when they met in the PG/HArley Quinn limited series...
There are definitely two Harleys too - one in Suicide Squad and one on Cony Island.
ReplyDeleteThe Mafia wouldn't stand a chance against these two. But then, there may be someone else pulling their strings.
ReplyDeleteOf course I'd go peek at #831 right while I'm binge-watching Orphan Black (which did have its own comic for a while, BTW). Now I'm thinking that these two were part of a similar cloning project, and wondering what other heroines (from other companies and continuities) might be involved, with similar appearance and a murky background. Ghost is the closest possibility that comes to mind.

Definitely, yes... although there does seem to be some leakage of memories between them (Coney Island Harley telling the prospective artists for her first post-Flashpoint series that she'd been in the Squad, for example, or Squad Harley meeting Wonder Woman during the Squad/JLA crossover and apparently remembering the team-up from [Coney Island] 'Harley's Little Black Book'...): Then again, Batman has already discovered that there are three versions of the Joker all in existence simultaneously and that wouldn't work -- without each of them trying to kill off the two "imposters" -- unless there was a "meeting of minds" between them.
@Simreeve: "Ah, but _which_ Power Girl? They currently have at least _two_ versions...flying around?"
ReplyDeleteMy semi-sarcastic point, exactly.
