News of a solo Doctor Doom film had me scratching my head. If producers were looking for a property to spin off of the Fantastic Four franchise. The Silver Surfer seems like a much better choice. He's got a great back story and his look was already perfected in his previous cinematic outing. Plus, it would offer a second chance to get Galactus right - no cloud this time!
Here's my "guess". After constant criticism that they have NOT gotten the character right, a stand-alone Doom film might just correct that; and possibly back-door a reboot of the franchise. If they con successfully posit a Doom as the dictator he is, then he sets his sights on Reed and destroying the FF - there's your Doom sequel right there...
ReplyDeleteBut I agree with you: They should do a Silver Surfer film - to compete with Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War.
that image of dr. fate looks really cool!!!!! is it from an action figure?.....love it!!!!
ReplyDeleteDrFate looks like one of the Power Rangers.
ReplyDeleteAnon, its from when Alex Ross was doing portraits of all the JLA and JSA members.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I kind of thought that Dr Fate looked like an Alex Ross work. That's but one factor that makes this cover look simply fantastic. The hint at the story within makes this one of your best covers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you re: Dr Doom and Silver Surfer. Making a film focusing on a villain is generally a bad idea -- it's been done successfully (Hannibal Lecter comes to mind), but that's the exception rather than the rule. Norrin Radd's personal story would make for a great motion picture.
Fate appears to be excited. The shorts are supposed to hide what the tights reveal.
ReplyDeleteHow about Batman and Thor vs. The Mask?*
ReplyDelete*Either the Dark Horse version or the Nelvana-animated spin-off from the Nineties.
In my opinion, Dr. Doom's story is just as compelling as the Silver Surfer's. For this reason, I think that a Dr. Doom solo movie could work even though it might be a hard sell. First of all, they'd have to return Victor to his comic book roots and jettison everything that they've done with him in the movies so far (except for the armor and the green cloak).
ReplyDeleteThe death of Doom's parents, his relationship with Boris, his star crossed love for the first Valeria, his study of science and the dark arts, the accident that scared Victor's face, the Tibetan monks who built his armor, his attempts to free his mother's soul from Hell and his takeover of Latveria would all make for a very thrilling movie.
In an ideal world, the movie would end with Doom watching the news of The Fantastic Four's mission to Monster Island. Recognizing Reed Richards for whom he still holds a grudge, he begins to plot his revenge....
@Cary Comic: I was scratching my head over your suggestion, until I remembered the origin of the Mask's mask. (BTW, I loved the movie, but I've never read the comic.)
ReplyDeleteNeither have I. As far as I'm permanently concerned, the movie and its Saturday morning spin-off were much better.
ReplyDelete@ my namesake: I can just imagine Norrin's Radd's word balloon at that moment.
ReplyDelete"Is that my surfboard in your front pocket? Or are you just glad to see me?"
I'm with Sonofjack. The only potential problem is how Kirby was able to install so much into Doom in only a few pages to the point that even John Bryne's retread in the 80's was just padding some things out, and how well you could translate that into a movie's run time without dragging things out.
