As far as I know, these two pulp heroes have never crossed paths, which is a little surprising. They seem as though they would work together well in in a story.
STF Patron Ken Roskos pointed out in a previous comments section that they both had the same publisher back in the 40's so it could have happened
they have appeared in some of the comics together, for example they teamed up when dc had the copyright for both and dynamite entertainment did a min seres called Justice, Inc. where they both teamed up with another character called the Avenger
ReplyDeleteWill Murray has written two team-ups between the two in his book series, "The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage." (He's also put Doc up against King Kong.)
ReplyDeleteBoth are two of my favorite pulp heroes and I think there would be a lot of conflict for the Shadow has no issue with guns and Doc Savage avoids guns except in extreme measures. Best team up would be against some monsters which have no redemption capability.
ReplyDeleteNow, if only DC would have Batman team-up with all three stalwarts of the pulp era! Perhaps with their own version of Marvel's "Acts Of Vengeance" story arc!
ReplyDeleteCary Comic: Batman met Doc and the gang (and I think the Avenger) during the "First Wave" mini-series, and he's had a couple of meetings with the Shadow when DC had the license. The First Wave (including the spin-off Doc Savage and Spirit titles) did different takes on the pulp characters, and weren't great but were not horrible either.
ReplyDeleteIn late 1989, DC had the license for both characters and did indeed do a crossover. It occurred in THE SHADOW STRIKES! 5-6 and DOC SAVAGE 17-18.
ReplyDeleteThe cover looks great regardless, and there's always room for more crossovers with these two.
ReplyDeleteAch, I need to do more homework I guess. I found this info in an old copy of the World Encyclopedia of Comics, edited by Maurice Horn, so it was news to me. It's still an awesome cover though.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite panel of the team up was when a third person yelled to them:"Clark!" "Kent!". PRICELESS.
ReplyDeleteDark Horse Comics also a 2-issue Shadow/Doc Savage story
ReplyDeleteDoc and the Shadow met way back in the 490's for only like one or 2 panels in a Shadow comic, Shadow was going out to town and waved to Doc and asked him to watch over things
ReplyDeleteDC and Dark Horse have both done Doc/Shadow stories, and Will Murray has written 2 novels teaming them up.
ReplyDeleteDoc Savage: The Sinister Shadow (The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage Book 14)
ReplyDeleteAnd both of them were involved (peripherally) with the Rocketeer.
ReplyDelete@JJ: I know. I bought every single issue of that (regrettably ill-fated) imprint. What I was referring to, however, was an intercompany crossover, by DC and DE, featuring all four of them getting together at the same time!
ReplyDeleteImagine Ra's Al Ghul vs. Doc Savage; the Shadow vs. Deadshot; the Avenger vs. Clayface; and Batman vs. John Sunlight.
DC/DE have just finished one Batman/Shadow 6-issue series, and started another.
ReplyDeleteHave you read the Batman/Tarzan crossover, 'Curse of the Cat-Woman'? That's worth a look, in my opinion...
The best crossover for pulps was Masks and Masks II but Doc Savage was not in it and neither was Batman.
ReplyDeleteOops!
ReplyDelete"Claws of the", not "Curse of the"...
@Simreeve: I know. "Curse of..." was Simone Simon and Kent Smith.
ReplyDelete;-)
Now that Doc Savage met Vandal Savage, how about Dr. Strange meeting Prof. Strange. Or have you done that?
ReplyDelete@Isaac: Or, even better? Stephen and Adam Strange teaming up their half-brother Hugo to rescue their long-lost father. Golden Age crime-fighter Thomas "Doc" Strange!
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say you could call it: "Strange Family Matter."
P.S.---Or, rather, that's what Ross could call it. :oops!:
ReplyDelete@Cary ;-)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely LOVE this cover!!! One of your best ever.....
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jinzo!
