When I was a kid, I saw Dr. Light as one of the premiere DC villains. Unlike most super-villains, he wasn't confined to a single superhero. He got around, taking on Green Lantern, The Atom, The Teen Titans, The JLA and more. It's too bad that he later became somewhat of a joke, and what was done with him in Identity Crisis still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'd like to see a Rebirth version that undoes a lot of those missteps.
There was a post-Flashpoint version who was a scientist [a good man, and happily married] working for one of the US government's agencies. He was drafted into the government-run version of the JLA, and died when [IIRC] somebody covertly pushed Superman's powers out of control...
ReplyDeleteYeah that whole IC thing left a bad taste in pretty much EVERYBODY's mouth. A very polarizing story if there ever was one. Probably a very good thing it's not in-continuity anymore....right?
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo, a Dazzler and GL team-up really is a no-brainer, considering how similar their powers are to a certain degree, so props to you for posting this one, and with Dr. Light no less. Damn that would really be a cool and intense battle just between Dazzler and Light. I might have to use that as a future battle on my blog's feature, So Who Would Win?
It would really be interesting to see just how much Dr. Light and Dazzler could interfere with each other's powers.
Personally I prefer the female version of Dr Light. She even was in JLU and a scene with her rescuing Superman after he was hit by JLU's space gun. She reminded me of GL there. It would be nice if a writer as long as she does not turn into an ubber dyke chick like which happens in Marvel.

And even leaving aside the bad taste, there were some major holes in the plot (such as the fact that the flamethrower Jean used should have left traces that the early tests would have revealed, but those tests said "no" to such weaponry; and the fact that none of the villains should have had any idea about Robin's secret identity, which at that point was still secret even from most of the heroes...) -- let alone the ease with which Deathstroke took down so many Justice League members in a single fight, which basically relied on stupidity on their part -- that make it best forgotten.
"Rebirth" should've ret-conned _everything_ all the way back to the original COIE! That way, there wouldn't be a bad taste in _anybody's_ mouth. For instance, Power Girl fans could mercifully forget the granddaughter-of-Arion phase.
ReplyDeleteAnd Supergirl fans could forget the Earth-Angel phase.
And Wonder Girl fans could forget the "Death-to-all-counterparts-of-Troia" phase.
Etc. etc. etc.
Can't you just stop wishing that the Post-Crisis history of DC should've been retconned in Rebirth?
DeletePost-Crisis was a better reboot than the New 52 and modernised the publisher, whether you liked it or not. Do we actually want the DC Universe to be demodernised into their Pre-Crisis continuity? Nope. Also, Power Girl's origins has been reverted back to her being a Kryptonian and Donna becoming from Wonder Girl to Troia was a natural progression to her character development.
@Anonymous: sounds like a comic book version of what a lot of people in Hollywood are starting to call "Femgate."
ReplyDeleteOn a lighter note: anybody else hear about the upcoming "Crisis On Earth-X" crossover on CW? Or DC's publication of a JLA/Watchmen team-up?*
ReplyDelete*YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, Flashpoint and the New 52 seemed to have undid IC, as Sue eventually showed up alive in Simone's version of 'Secret Six'.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw Dr. Light, he was warming up for the Justice League with practice on the Teen Titans. The sad punchline was that he was foiled by "meddling kids" (and probably their Beast Boy green dog) I think Identity Crisis was intended to pump him up a bit; unfortunately, it left a sour, bitter aftertaste.

And even that wasn't as sad -- for him, anyway -- as the time when he was beaten by [a new] 'Little Boy Blue & the Blue Boys": as one letter-column writer wrote "Little Boy Blue & the Blue Boys? I could beat Little Boy Blue & the Blue Boys."
^_^
Maybe a Scooby-Doo/Jetsons team-up could have the Jetsons going back in time to keep Scooby-Doo from being ("shudder") neutered so Astro 's birth wouldn't be wiped out.
ReplyDelete@GH: Yes! We really do.
ReplyDeleteAnd, the multiple Troia story arc was more like an unnatural progression.
ReplyDelete@Mateus: gotta agree with Anon, on this one.
