Yeah, maybe Godzilla is a little outmatched here, but if I saw this comic on the racks when I was a kid I would have had to find out how the battle went down. Godzilla did cross paths with a lost of Marvel folks when he had a title published by the company, but never the world devourer. They missed out on a sure seller!
I find it pretty interesting that one could interpret the tagline as referring to either Godzilla _or_ Galactus…
ReplyDeleteAnyway, great cover as always!

What if Godzilla was Galactus's imaginary friend, as Hobbes is to Calvin?
ReplyDeleteGalactis vs Spaceman Spiff!
DeleteI'd still buy this in a heartbeat. And, who knows? Maybe Godzilla's being cosmically augmented by aliens, in the hope that he can end the threat of Galactus forever.
ReplyDeleteGalactus says, "Yum! Lizard stew!"
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of reptiles, how about killer croc vs the teenage mutant ninja turtles?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking not about reptiles, have you considered the Flash vs. the Roadrunner or Speedy Gonzales?

Flash [Wally WWest] actually met Speedy Gonzales, in a 4-issue 'Superman/Bugs Bunny' limited series c.(1999 or 2000; re-released as a trade paperback earlier this year) which saw a whole bunch of the Loony Tunes characters granted honorary JLA membership.
"You're pretty fast for a mouse."
"And you, senor, are pretty fast for something that cats don't chase."
imagine if Godzilla had the power cosmic yikes
ReplyDeleteAs many have said already, this is a great cover. I'd certainly be interested in seeing how these two gargantuan gladiators go at it.
ReplyDeleteAlaric brings up an interested point, though. It could even be that Godzilla has the power of Captain Universe (which brings up a quite different, if possibly impractical, cover idea).
They probably thought it would be a sure flop! And I can't honestly say I blame them. I'm pretty sure even Robert Ripley couldn't have suspended that much disbelief! Let alone, me. Not unless Marvel had done something even more shark-jumpy to even the odds.
ReplyDeleteLike, say, temporarily making Big G Uni-powered.
And, no, I did not read Bob Greenwade's missive, first! Great minds just happen to coincidentally think alike.
ReplyDeleteMaybe at end of fight Galactus makes Godzilla his new herald!
ReplyDeleteNow, THAT issue I am positive would be a sure seller.
ReplyDelete@ Carycomic: brown-noser.
ReplyDeletePersonally I'd like to see Godzilla against Superman, and to balance out the power levels a bit, because he absorbs radiation, maybe the Big G has been feeding on a certain green meteorite...
ReplyDeleteIt had to happen!!

Silver-Age Superman did meet at least one Kryptonite-fuelled dinosaur...
Galactus vs The Tick!
ReplyDelete'Ambush Bug, Herald of Galactus'!
ReplyDeleteStanley & His Monster vs. Galactus?
ReplyDeleteWow epic
