The Ugly Bunch
Ever since Ban Grimm was transformed into a rock creature but maintained his heart, determination and humor as The Thing, I have always been attracted to non-human looking comic characters. I think the fact that their appearances are so extreme allows readers of all kinds to somehow identify with them in a way they might not with a standard good-looking superhero. Plus, the just look really cool!
The formation of this team was gradual - Kilowog met Wonder Wart-Hog in STF #511... who then wete joined by Metamorpho and Warlock in the next issue... Kilowog met Beta Ray Bill in STF #1059... and Death's Head joins them all this very issue!
Ben Grimm shows 'em how it's done!
ReplyDeleteGreat cover! Although...I think Kilowog might not think he should be on this team... ;)
I have wondered for some years if Kilowog is DC's tribute to Wonder Wart-Hog. ^_^
ReplyDeleteSo where's Wonder Wart from? And of course, why no Ben Grimm?
ReplyDeleteBen has his own team - The Quarrymen. WW is a Glibert Shelton underground comics character.
ReplyDeleteIt's always good to see Death's Head pop up!
ReplyDeleteYecch the Wonder Dog (of Ruby-Spears "Mitey Man" fame) makes them all look like runners-up in a beauty pageant. LOL!
ReplyDeleteDon't forget Ultra the Multi-Alien! Or how about Ar, Ir, and Ur from the Doom Patrol?
ReplyDeleteHow about creating an 'ugly' all-undead team -- zombies and mummies and non-'romantic' vampires, and such -- too?
ReplyDeleteYou could call it 'The Grave And The Cold'.
^_^
I second Simreeve's idea. Halloween's not that far off... ^_^
ReplyDeleteThe Damned is pretty much an undead team...
ReplyDeleteGreat team up! I am reminded a bit of a gag Marvel did ages ago where Dr Doon, Baron Zemo, Molecule Man, Madame Masque, and the Controller formed the All-Scar Squadron :D
ReplyDeleteIf that's the case, you should include Snake Eyes of GI JOE fame.*
ReplyDelete*I loved the Marvel version of Hasbro's collectibles much better than the current IDW version.
