Wonder Girl and Black Widow

There has been talk on and off about a solo Black Widow film, but the underperformance of Ghost in the Shell may have cast doubt on Scarlett Johansson's theatrical draw.  Sill, strong performances by Wonder Woman and/or Captain Marvel at the box office could get interest rolling again.  I think the best route would be a film headlined by Black Widow, but featuring Hawkeye and introducing some others as well.  It might be a good way to bring the likes of Silver Sable, Dominic Fortune, The Shroud or Paladin to live action and make a corker of an espionage tale.

  1. Perhaps the under-performance of Ghost in the Shell is due to the material, not the stars involved. Regardless of the star power involved in Life, I'm not going to see it because I don't enjoy horror films in any form. Putting my favorite actor in a zombie film doesn't make me want to see a zombie film.

  2. Very well composed cover with both ladies drawn by George Perez meaning if they switched costumes you would notice difference.

  3. Ghost in the Shell's performance at the box office has nothing - and everything - to do with ScarJo. She's miscast. I know nothing about the movie, except that it's Asian, with a white star. I've heard nothing but "whitewashing" for weeks now. To say that the film's performance is a reflection on the star shows how doubly tone deaf Hollywood is.

  4. Personally, I liked GHOST IN THE SHELL. It complemented the anime series quite nicely, I thought. That being said, maybe Scarlet Johansson could team up with Jennifer Garner for a BW/Elektra adventure. Perhaps to break up an alliance--or maybe even end a turf war--between Hydra and the Hand!

  5. I think it is due and overdue for a Black Widow movie. And considering "Avengers 2"... why not with Bruce Banner? Despite what he says in "The Avengers", he is very obviously not ALWAYS angry. So... Hydra grabs Banner (so many good reasons to try to get him.) 'Tasha goes after him. Spy stuff and fights and other fun. She finds him, and releases him... and the Hydra brainwashing makes the Hulk attack her.

Well, yeah, it's been done... but not with characters who have their history right now.

Twin Perez art, Ross? You're a madman! MAD, DO YOU HEAR ME? I love it!

  6. Odd that the Japanese don't consider Scarlet Johannson to be miscast. And they certainly ought to know. If anything is hurting the film (Which is doing better in overseas markets) it is A) Anime based films still seem too much of a fringe niche for mainstream audiences (Just as comic movies were not so long ago) And B) A misguided perception that 'Only' an Asian actress can play the role of a character created in Japan Remember that the whole premise of the film is that the Major IS a blank slate. The Major is not defined by race, gender or any of that but will very gladly take advantage of any weakness an opponent might show on either of those accounts.

  7. Ross was commenting on the lack of usable Zatara images the other day. He may be one of the few Marvel or DC characters George Perez hasn't drawn!

  8. @Jay Johnson - I think there's a panel or two in Crisis, but nothing fully exposed.

  9. Awesome cover, Ross. I love the muscle definition on Donna....

  10. I did enjoy Ghost in the Shell but chances of it being a box office hit has been overshadowed by the ongoing whitewashing controversy. In fact, the term values dissonance is applied as Western fans were divided on the casting of Johansson as the Major, while Japanese fans were supportive of the casting plus the director of the 1995 anime film adaptation was favourable towards the live-action film.

Does any company currently have the comic-book rights to 'Bewitched'? If so, then i wouldn't entirely rule out this possibility.
And, yes, I would like to see this too...

  15. @Simreeve: it used to be a Screen Gems presentation, which was originally a trademark of Columbia Studios. But, I think Columbia is now owned by Sony.

  16. Anonymous two, I think a few people have suggested something similar over the years, so you're not alone in your thoughts about Avengers/Avengers.

But it made me think of another fun match up, two English heroes, Bananaman and (Mrs.) Peel.

  17. Or Zatanna meets Samantha Stevens (of "Bewitched").

  18. The time has passed for a Black Widow movie--in large part because Johansson is not a strong actress; she is usually the weakest performer in Marvel movies, and you've likely seen the best of what she--and the character has to offer. Nearing 20 MCU films in and no Black Widow movie strongly suggests there will never be one.

  19. Oh, I don't know about that, Tark, baby! I think Scarlet Jo and J-Gar could give us overgrown fanboys _quite_ the delightful silver screen cat-fight as BW and Elektra, respectively.

    ;-D
