Swamp Thing and The Legion of Monsters

I really hope that the Justice League Dark movie can finally do Swamp Thing justice.  His live action movies in the 80's were B-movie cheese fests and the low budget TV series that followed was even worse.  He hasn't fared that well in animation, either.  His self titled cartoon was very forgettable and while I was glad to see him included in the new Justice League Action, his personality seems way off there.  I want to finally see a serious take on Swamp Thing, reflecting the amazing comic book tales that he has appeared in.

Swamp Thing met Werewolf By Night back in STF #1463...

  1. The Alex Durock Swamp Thing of the Eighties was still preferable to the Roger Cormanesque CGI b*****dization of Man-Thing used by Syfy Channel circa ten years back.

  2. Holy Nostalgia, Batman!

Let's see if I recognize these Legionnaires. Frankenstein's Monster? Check. N'kantu the Living Mummy? Check. Jack Russell, Werewolf By Night? Check. Simon "the Zombie" Garth? Check. Vampirized Red Sonja from Dynamite Entertainment? Check.

Nice cross-section. No, wait! Sonja!! I wasn't talking about THAT kind of croaaaaaaaaaargh!!!

    ;-D

    1. Actually that would be Satana, the daughter of the devil in Marvel Comics and the brother of Daimon Hellstrom

  3. Too bad the Creature Commandos couldn't stop by. :)

  4. Marvel should do a movie based on the version of the Howling Commandos that appeared in their recent cartoons. It's basically Legion of Monsters with Blade as the team leader. The movie could have Blade, Man-Thing, Living Mummy, Werewolf By Night, Frankenstein's Monster, and Satana with Nick Fury and Damion Hellstrom as support staff. It could be a lot of fun.

    1. I think Howling Commandos (horror version) would be a great movie, but I would add Ghost Rider and make Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) the team leader.

  5. The first Swamp Thing movie directed by Wes Craven was not bad. The suit was awful. The second movie was awful but the suit was awesome. The TV series was better than both movies and would stand alongside CW's super heroes shows with no problem. The Howling Commandos in the cartoon was a bad joke and was translated into a slightly better comic but not enough to last more than 6 issues. Liked the Legion of Monsters but why use them rather than the original team of Ghost Rider, Mobius the Living Vampire, Man-Thing and Werewolf by Night.

  6. I liked the first Swamp Thing movie for what it was. So did my older brother who was not a comics reader. I never saw the second one (Siskel and Ebert gave it two thumbs down.) or the TV series. Back then as a comic book fan I was pretty thrilled with ANY comic book properties that made it to the big screen. If you told me back then that many of the biggest movies would be based on comic book characters I would have been very skeptical.

    Ahem! The "brother"?!?
Might I, politely, enquire whether you've had your eyes tested recently?

  8. Personally, as I've mentioned before, I liked both Swamp Thing movies as long as I don't try to keep them related to each other. The first was appropriately dark; the second was campy fun, like the '66 Batman series. (The live-action series was cool, but the cartoon gave me a headache.)

That aside, I'd love to see Swamp Thing teaming up with Groot. Maybe they could even form the core of a team with other plant-form characters such as Bushroot and Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan.

  9. @Kevin Doolittle: looks more like Sonja, to me.

  10. Pity you used the Marvel Franenstein. The DC Frankenstein (with the red coat and sword) is enormously cooler.

Although would it be possible to do an all-frankenstein cover? I know there have been a couple of super-hero interpretations. How many different comic Frankensteins could be found?

  11. @ My namesake: are you referring to the Spawn of Frankenstein first published as a series of back-up stories in the 1970's PHANTOM STRANGER comic? Or the ironically-named "Lucky" from WEIRD WAR'S Creature Commandos?

  12. There's also Dell's [allegedly rather awful] heroic version from the '60s...
