Captain Marvel Jr. and Elvis

We all know that Elvis looks great in his white Captain Marvel suit, so he'd have made a great Lieutenant!  This cover comes about from another suggestion by Michael Eury, editor of the always awesome Back Issue Magazine.  Michael just released a new book, Hero-A-Go-Go, celebrating the camp age of comics, I highly recommend checking it out.

  1. This is great and Elvis was supposed to have been influenced by Junior

  2. Elvis had his own comic book...? Obvious question, since just about every celebrity did back in the day.

  4. How much you want to bet that Elvis would switch to Lt. Marvel by reciting a Johnny Quick-type formula?

    "10-Q! 10-Q very much."

  5. I think that Elvis image comes from Marvel's 'What If...?' Vol. 2 #34, where Thanos uses the Infinity Gauntlet to turn Galactus into the King.

  6. "Viva Fawcett City"

Ross, we are all so lucky to have access to your mad genius....

  7. I could be wrong, but I think Andy has it backwards: Junior's a big Elvis fan, and that's the reason for his current Elvis-esque look.

Ross, this cover is a very nicely done one. It hints at a light but very fun story that I'd want to read.

OT: I had an interesting thought yesterday, and though I doubt we'd ever actually see it on this blog I figured I'd share it just for fun: Snow White and the Seven Soldiers of Victory!

  9. I've got a challenge even Mr. Greenwade couldn't top.

Batman '66 meets the Man From Atlantis!*

*Marvel had a comic book adaptation of that NBC two-season wonder around the same time they were half-seriously considering a TV pilot for Namor the Submariner,

  11. Bob Greenwade: From http://www.elvispresleymusic.com.au/elvis-presley-capt-marvel-jr.html

"In 'Elvis and Gladys' Elaine Dundy highlights Elvis' interest in the comic book hero, Capt. Marvel Jr., and demonstrates the interesting similarity in Elvis' haircut compared to that of the comic book character and that his TCB logo (with a Marvel-esque lightning bolt insignia) also shows inspiration from Captain Marvel Jr. In addition, some of Elvis' stage outfits (with a half-cape similar to those worn by the Marvels).

"Elvis Presley was a big fan of Captain Marvel Jr. and his collection of Captain Marvel Jr. comic books still sits in the attic of Graceland."

  12. Also, Bob G., it sounds like you watched the same "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" rerun that I did last night, when they made a joke about "Snow White and the Seven-Year-Itch."

  14. So this was before he faked his death and had to fight a mummy in a retirement home in Texas?

  15. Wasn't that "Ash vs. Bubba Hotep?"
