Zatanna has had a number of different looks, but for obvious reasons the top hat and fishnet look always seems to return. I will say that while the above look didn't do much for me, I did like the second new outfit she wore in
Justice League of America, designed by George Perez.

ReplyDeleteIn 1978, Julius Schwartz ran a poll in JLA asking the readers to decide who the next new member should be. He was surprised when Zatanna, who hadn't been seen for about 5 years, won by a landslide. So, after hundreds of readers cast their votes to say that they wanted Zatanna in the JLA, what did he do? Changed her costume and powers so that she no longer resembled the character that the fans wanted.

ReplyDeleteThis is a really funny cover idea, Ross!
ReplyDeleteJust to be clear, the George Perez costume is the one with the giant sleeves and the weird red thing on her head, right? If so, then no, I never cared for it. I actually prefer her "disco" costume (particularly if it's drawn by Jim Aparo like this image is. Va-va-voom!)
As much as I admire George Perez's skills as an artist, I never cared for his costume designs much. I didn't care for the original open chest Nightwing costume, and I thought that Jericho's costume was a nightmare. But what do I know? George is rich and semi-famous, and I'm a guy who comments on a blog under an assumed name....
The fishnet and top hat was always her best, I always felt the others were different characters. I'm reminded the down side of Zatanna was her speaking backwards, a bit hard for me to figure out what she's saying! I did follow Dazzler for about a year, though I didn't care much about disco at the time. She was an interesting character, and you found a good combination here.
ReplyDeleteSorry. But, her top-hat-and-tuxedo-with-tails motif should never have been altered at all! The black unitard sucked. And the outfit with the weird scarab headdress was just too creepy!*
ReplyDelete*I seriously expected that to be revealed, someday, as some kind of mind-controlling, pseudo-Lovecraftian parasite.

There have been jokes about that floating around for years...
Now when is Zatara going to meet Mandrake? Maybe in one of your teams, together with other magicians like Sargon, ibis the Invincible and of course Mumford "a là peanut butter sandwiches"!
ReplyDeleteI can just picture Sargon and Ibis having lunch at the Brown Turban. ;-)
ReplyDeletelol brown turban .....very funny.....or yrew ynnuf!!!!
ReplyDeleteyesss fishnets.....very sexy.....lol
ReplyDeleteWhat is the brown turban? I don't get it.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: The Brown Derby is a famous restaurant in Los Angeles. But Ibis and Sargon both wore turbans, so it would be funny to see them at a restaurant called the Brown Turban. (Or not... The joke loses something in the explanation.)
ReplyDeleteThanks, that makes sense. Especially when you say derby the American way.
