Ferro Lad got killed off before it became the thing to do in comics, and it was a pretty big shock at the time. The Sun-Eater as a villain seemed legitimately lethal to me since he was able to kill off a Legionnaire. DC let him Ferro Lad stay dead for a good long time, too - only being resurrected after a few LSH reboots had taken place.
This story is only Part One of a Two-Part Epic - be sure to come back tomorrow for the thrilling conclusion!
Please tell me this is a "Stark Future!"
ReplyDeleteAwesome cover! I love the Bronze Age Iron Man armor. Was Ferro Lad killed off in the late '60's or early '70's? I started reading LSH around the time Matter-Eater Lad snapped and Tyroc returned to "Brigadoon"...
AirDave: 1967. About a year after he was introduced. The story is, when Jim Shooter created him, he intended him to be black. Mort Weisenger vetoed that, being afraid of controversy that might hurt sales. So instead, Shooter decided to make FL the Legion's first (permanent) casualty.
ReplyDeleteCorrection: He was created in 1966, killed in 1967.
DeleteGiven yesterday's cover, one might be forgiven for thinking and hoping this was part 2 of a delightful three-parter! :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I could imagine them working together. I didn't discover FL until a Superboy story in an LSH museum and thinking of him as deceased. I think I only read 2-3 of Ferro Lad's appearances. I hope Stark can use the future technology to save earth or the universe or whatever from whoever/whatever danger.
ReplyDeleteI like Dave's story title, though I'd also hope for "Ironclad!"
ReplyDeleteDamn smooth job on that 'shopping and inclusion of that background. Beautifully done.
ReplyDeleteHope they team up to fight Magneto!
ReplyDeleteIf many of Tony's descendants are like Tony, I suspect that by the 31st century most Earth-humans might have his DNA...

As an aside, the Adventure issue that introduced Ferro Lad (and Karate Kid, Princess Projectra, Nemesis Kid, and the Khunds) was the second LSH story I ever read. It was also Jim Shooter's first professional sale (at the age of 13!), and he autographed my copy at an FCBD appearance a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteDid you ever read the flashback to just after that story, about Ferro Lad (before his death) on a mission with PP & KK -- that occupied an issue of the first 'Baxter'-format series?
ReplyDelete@Simreeve: maybe the reason so many people have Tony Stark's DNA is because of some yet-to-be revealed liason with Nedor's time-traveling _Toni_ Stark!
