Hong Kong Phooey Vs. Chester Cheetah

This cover comes about as a suggestion from my brilliant and talented Sister-in-law Melanie.  She told me that she came up with an idea that I would have never thought of on my own, and she was right!  Chester Cheetah always seemed to be the "Poochie" of food mascots to me and I can see him snapping one day and lashing out at Tony the Tiger and the rest until HKP chops some sense back into him.

  1. Murdered by Chester Cheetah would certainly be the PG way to explain Snagglepuss' disappearance from the front of Cocoa Krispie boxes (while still preserving the H-B connection) should this ever get done as an actual direct-to-video animated feature.*

*Kellogg's was the chief sponsor for the prime-time Huckleberry Hound Show during the very early Sixties. With Snagglepuss, the pseudo-Shakespearian mountain lion, one of the rotating cast of back-up characters.

  2. It's always a treat for me to see HKP in this blog. This does look like a fun story, too, for the reasons Cary describes. But still, what's next -- Dick Tracy pursuing the Frito Bandito?

While I love the punnish title (even though it's been used at least two or three times already), I don't recall Chester ever being associated with a cereal.

  3. I think Ross was going for something like subconscious resentment, at _not_ being a cereal box logo, was brought to the surface by bad nachos.

  4. If you read the story, you see he killed Tony The Tiger...

  5. This is great!! The cover really works with their positions, and HKP just seems to fit with these crazy covers. Not sure if you could find Frito Bandito, but he and Tony the Tiger and other classic advertising cartoon characters would be great to see.
Thanks for a nice surprise today.

  11. The caption gives away too much of the plot. It would be better to leave the reader wondering why they are fighting and why Chester or Phooey turned bad. That's what old comics did when they were done well. Otherwise a neat idea.

  12. How about Quisp and Qwsp (whose names sound the same); Also Frito Bandito and Gomez, Jr. (a UPA character who's usually an ally of Dick Tracy).

  13. Also Sugar Bear (Sugar Crisp cereal) and Tasmanian Devil's father (Taz-Mania)(who both sound alike!).
