I am very glad that
Wonder Woman will be a period piece film. It serves to add to the mythic aspect of the character and I have enjoyed the superhero movies set in different decades that I have seen like
Captain America and the recent
X-Men films. It will be interesting to see how much contemporary action, if any, she sees in the film. I have heard rumors of a Batman appearance so there may be at least a little.
I'm betting it's Lord Plunder...working for Ares!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, though: that's great news about WONDER WOMAN! I'm just hoping the island of Themiscyra is still set in the Bermuda Triangle.
This is not a pairing that I would have thought of myself, but the story idea behind it would make it quite a natural one. I might even expect cameos from Batman, Oracle, and/or Black Panther.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Oracle, we really haven't seen much of her on this blog -- once back in the Marvel Two-in-One days, and once as leader of the Decoders (STF #461). I think she does have a lot more potential than that; for example, what if Professor X decided to call her in to help with some technical problem with Cerebro? Or maybe she could ask for help from Cloak & Dagger for some crisis.
As for the Batman cameo in the Wonder Woman film, I checked the IMDb listing for the movie and found nothing. That's not conclusive proof, of course, but the "Complete Cast and Crew" page already has four uncredited appearances so it's not promising.
Even so, I think it'll be interesting to see Wonder Woman in World War I. I've been trying to figure out why the decision was made to place it in that period rather than the traditional World War II; hopefully there will be a plot point to make it clear.
As for a Wonder Woman film; in the words of Sean Connery, I'm waiting to be impreshed." I love DC characters, but their live action has been disappointing. I would be much more excited about a Black Widow film. Even though we've pretty much seen quite a bit of her from the appearances she's made...
ReplyDeleteBob G, a cynical guess might be that we are currently in the midst of the centenary on WWI, so the producers may be wanting to capitalize on interest in that period. But that's just a guess on a possible reason.
ReplyDeleteAnon - A remark of Wonder Woman's near the end of "Batman vs. Superman" leads me to think that the centenary does play a role in the decision (though from an artistic rather than mercenary standpoint). I'd hope for a bit more, though.
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is the WONDER WOMAN is being set in WW1 to prevent the casual movie-goer from thinking she's a rip-off of Captain America, who's first MCU film was an origin story set in WW2.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is a strange twist to have Wonder Woman start career in World War I. I think her no longer having flag based costume distances her a bit from Captain America. I know WHY she originally had a flag based costume bu it never made since she was basically an illegal alien. I like the reasoning from the animated film 'dressing in colors to show respect'.
ReplyDeleteI think the two, Widow and Diana, are a natural pairing but if in Wonder Woman was in the "I-Ching" area it would make sense that she went to Widow for training on how to fight without powers.
WW2 was a result of all the unresolved issues of WW1. As a politcal science major, i always found the first world war much more facinating: the Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungarians were still in intact, olde Russia, and the US was not yet a superpower. Things got quite boring for me after that period.
