This would be a fun match up. The sons of Zeus and Darkseid not only each possess incredible strength, they both have a real appreciation for combat - Orion, because he was bred for battle and Hercules because he just really likes fighting. It wouldn't take much to get them to face off.
Great idea but bad cover. I would not know Orion was on the cover except for the title. Sorry for the criticism but boy I would like to see these two actually going at it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know. Orion has a pretty distinctive look. I like that you get the idea of combat and battle from a limited perspective. The reflection of Hercules coming at Orion. If you're familiar with Kirby's work, The New Gods, and Orion - then you know he's ready for Hercules. I'm open to the different approach
ReplyDeleteThe only thing Herc likes more than fighting is boozing. So, he'd probably instigate the fight by drunkenly saying something like:
ReplyDelete"My father canst beat up thy father."
Thanks Dave! I did try to have a different perspective than the usual heroes face off type pose...
ReplyDeletehaha, Cary, no doubt!
Fantastic cover! You have really developed a flare for creative visuals since you started this blog!!!

ReplyDeleteI appreciate it Junior!
ReplyDeleteThis is an AWESOME cover. The reflection of Hercules attacking in Orion's helmet is very creative AND effective. I can see Orion crouching in a defensive fighting stance very clearly in my mind's eye. So what if some people can't tell that this is Orion's helmet without reading the title? Comics are, after all, a medium of both pictures AND words, and the best comics respect that dual nature. I applaud your ability to stretch creatively to provide your followers with dynamic, imaginative images. Kudos!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sonofjack!
ReplyDeleteand don't forget folks, coming tomorrow - STF #1600!
Those two HERCULES mini-series by Bob Layton back in the 80's were amazing. I was also a fan of the post-apocalyptic version that DC comics had with HERCULES UNBOUND in the 70's. Now that could prove to be and very interesting meeting. HERCULES VS HERCULES.
ReplyDeleteI second Wolfhammer's suggestion. In fact, I would love to see more instances of DC versus Marvel versions of the same characters such as Morgaine le Fey (DC) versus Morgan le Fay (Marvel) or the DC versus Marvel versions of the Frankenstein Monster. In fact, for that last one, you could even throw in the Dick Briefer version of the Frankenstein Monster (either the comedic or the serious one).
ReplyDeleteLove the cover no matter what anyone else says. Very clever idea I think to use Herc's reflection. You don't see his image being used like that alot.
ReplyDeleteOk, so who wins?
Yes, and I think there is a reason why you don't see it used alot
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dave about Orion's look; in fact, I recognized him before I recognized Hercules.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, the only criticism I can see for this (and I could be wrong) is that Herc's reflection shows his club in his left hand; I thought he was a rightie? (Maybe the Earth-STF version is left-handed; checking the tab, I see that we haven't seen him with weapon in hand since the B&B days.) Other than that, I think this is quite well done.
In reference to Wolfhammer's suggestion and Sonofjack's expansion, I think someone else once suggested bringing in both Marvel's and DC's versions of Hercules, along with the Kevin Sorbo and Disney versions, plus one or two others. That might be interesting, if they were brought together by some interdimensional protector (*cough* Access *cough*) telling them that they must be merged into a single individual to save the cosmos.
@Cary Comics
ReplyDelete"Insolent Olympian! So says the Source: Only Orion, God of War, may beat up my father!"
"Who's he then?"
Next panel is Herc being tackled through the bar wall.
