Firestorm and Cyclops

I was glad to see Firestorm featured in the promotional material for the upcoming Justice League Action series.  I always thought that he was a curious omission on Justice League Unlimited, I'm not sure why he wasn't featured there, given his history with the League in the comics and even on a previous animated outing on the later seasons of Super Friends.

  1. I can't help but wonder how such a team up would turn out.

Cyclops has always been one of the worst depicted characters for as long as I can remember, from all the way back to when Alex Summers became Havok and couldn't control his powers and escaped while the Xmen were pre-occupied with Arabian officials on horseback, Cyclops blasts them and refers to them as 'camel-jockeys'. I have always thought that name-calling was out of place.

In the Teen Titans-Xmen crossover, Cyclops, again looking too grim, thinks to himself that Darkseid had no right to resurrect Phoenix . . . or INTERRUPT US IN THE PROCESS!

What? When's the last time you tried to resurrect granpa?

And any and every time Cyclops is gnashing his teeth. You're scaring no one, fella.

And while he is getting better portrayal on Legends of Tomorrow (tho it isn't Ronny Raymond), I still recall Firestorm's juvenile era when he joined the JLA, and how he was used on the Superfriends cartoon, constantly paired up with Cyborg and Wonder Woman.

I can just envision these two paired up. "Firestorm, no! --- Not yet, Firestorm! --- No, Firestorm!"

  2. And now seeing the Sentinels after seeing Galactus previously makes me wonder, has Galactus ever encountered the Sentinels before? 251215

  3. Firestorm seriously never made it onto JLU? Huh. I guess he just doesn't have the marketing pull of B'wana Beast.

  4. More likely, this Firestorm is the Reed Richards version. Temporarily overconfident about the Sentinels being unable to adapt to his atomic-restructuring power. If they were modeled upon Amazo, to any extent, just the opposite would be the case!

  5. Ross - Love this team-up concept!! Also, for info about Firestorm on JLU, check here for answers from Bruce Timm himself.

And here is what Firestorm may have looked like on JLU!

  6. The problem with Firestorm is that his powers are so undefined, and it's hard to identify them at this late date and get any other writer to agree. I think that he can fly is the only thing that's agreed upon.
    Can he transmute elements?
Can he phase through solid objects?
Can he blast fire as the Human Torch?
    Is he super strong?
Can he survive in space or at the Earth's core?

I know there have been several Firestorms - another issue - and I think that either he's in Superman and Green Lantern's class of power, or he's ridiculous and at the Hawkman/Atom/Aquaman level of power. That's no disgrace, and it makes the characters individual - but with Firestorm, I don't think there's any agreement.

  7. @ELS: before the ill-advised COIE, the answer to all those questions was an unequivocal "yes."

I think that you're underestimating Aquaman, there: He might not be at Superman's level, overall, but he's definitely quite a bit more powerful than Hawkman...

  9. @Cary C.: Firestorm was super-strong? Where was this ever shown?

  11. @Cary Comic - While you're absolutely right that the Crisis caused the changes, I'm not sure the character was interesting enough that he wouldn't be changed. And that was with some great story hooks about him... just sad.

@Simreeve - I didn't believe the day has dawned when Aquaman would be defended as not being a wimp character. Bravo to you! And I consider Aquaman and Hawkman about equal in their characters and powers... but as always, it depends on who's writing them. Of course, this now demands Ross do an Aquaman/Hawkman team up with Stingray and the Falcon... :)

@Bob Buethe - I remember a couple of Justice League books where he lifted some pretty heavy stuff... for example, a case where he carried Black Canary and Green Arrow with a shoulder harness kinda set up, and they remarked that he was weird, but kinda strong. Or some such...

  12. @ELS: he demonstrated it while duking it out with the Hyena, Multiplex, Killer Frost I, Black Bison, etc.
