Little Nemo and Sandman

I haven't heard much about a potential Sandman live action movie since Joseph Gordon-Levitt announced that he was parting ways with the production.  I can understand why there would be difficulty in adapting Neil Gaiman's epic tale and I would rather the time be taken to do it right, so that's not necessarily a bad thing.  Still, I hope the film has not been completely abandoned.

Thank you to Marc Tyler Nobleman, comics' historian and Patron of this blog, for the idea to pair these two!

  1. Wow! This really is a pretty inspired pairing. Damn fine job on the cover as always.

We definitely do need a Sandman movie though. I mean they already have Preacher out on the small screen so, get with it people!!!!

  2. I'm not at all familiar with Gaiman's Sandman, but if a movie could be made of The Watchmen and Lord of the Rings, no one is spared as being 'unable to be filmed'.

  3. Someone has to forward this to Gaiman.

  4. The short story collection Sandman: Book of Dreams actually had a Sandman/Little Nemo crossover

  5. I remember an anime-like movie, that came out in the Eighties, based on the "Little Nemo" comic strip. It featured the voice of the late, great Mickey Rooney as the character who--for some reason--had been drawn to look like a 19th-century "minstrel!"

As I recall, the movie ended with LN and the Jasmine-like princess flying off on the magic bed to "live" happily ever after. But, that kind of freaked me out. Because that would entail the kid never waking up in the real world! Which would, of course, have freaked out his parents. Their son remaining catatonic in perpetuity.*

*Hey! I'm basically a realist. Where optimists see the glass as half-full, and pessimists see it as half-empty, realists know that it eventually becomes totally empty, thereby requiring a refill twice as fast as a glass that's already filled to the brim. ;-)

  7. This has to be the greatest cover yet. My favorite strip and my favorite comic. Just wow!

  8. Cary Comic, I still have that Little Nemo movie, Little Nemo in Slumberland, on dvd, copied from a VHS tape. Loved it, and yes, Mickey Rooney's character was probably supposed to appear clown-like, but he was clearly a blackface minstrel sort.
Still liked the movie. Thought it went a bit overboard with the 'evil aspects' that threatened Slumberland.

  9. Thanks, RF. I was beginning to think I was the only one with that good a memory.

  10. The original Sandman series has a direct reference to Little Nemo in "The Doll's House" story. Rose's brother (I forget his name) having nice dreams about going around with the Sandman "super hero", and in the last panel he wakes up to the nightmare that is his reality. The entire layout and style of that page is an unambiguous reference to the distinctive visual format of the original Little Nemo comics. I guarantee you Gaiman is familiar with Nemo

  11. @Carycomic Rooney's character Flip looked just like Flip in the original Little Nemo comics from the early 1900s. His appearance is innocent and clown-like enough that it worked okay. Now the "Imp" character on the other hand was thankfully left out of the movie....
