I was very sorry to hear yesterday about Darwyn Cooke having to receive palliative treatment for an aggressive cancer. Cooke's amazing storytelling brought us
Justice League: The New Frontier among many other incredible comics. He is such an amazing talent and deserves all of out thoughts and prayers at this time. Here's hoping his health improves very soon.
Update... Sadly I woke today to hear he had passed... RIP Darwyn Cooke.
wait? He's dead. :( That sucks man. Cooke drew characters looking retro the best.
ReplyDeleteThat's very sad news concerning Mr. Cooke. This cover is a very fitting tribute to his amazing talent. I sure would have loved to have seen this story written and drawn by him.
ReplyDeleteAwesome cover! Great Superman image. I really enjoyed DC: The New Frontier!
ReplyDeleteNot seeing the announcement that he's died; just that he's being treated for cancer.
No, I've seen the announcement that he has passed. Such a loss. An incredible artist and a wonderful person at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThough I remember reading the trade paperback, I hate to admit that I never looked too closely at the artist's credits. So, I have double reason to regret Mr. Cooke's passing! That being said, I can only hope he liked how WB's animators remained faithful to his illustrations when the direct-to-video movie adaptation of JL:TNF came out.
ReplyDeleteI know I loved it.
What all you guys have said. :-(
ReplyDeleteVery nice cover and tribute to Mr. Cooke. Truly a strong voice lost from the comics community. Very sad; he'll be missed!!
ReplyDeleteRIP Darwyn Cooke. I am a Bronze Age baby weened on Neal Adams style art and his many imitators of that era. I was also lucky enough to pick up the many reprints featured as back-up stories or in anthologies then that introduced me to the likes of Dick Sprang, Wayne Boring, Carmine Infantino, Reed Crandall, and Wally Wood. I also watched alot of Saturday Morning Cartoons, and was introduced to the stylings of a gentleman I later learned was Alex Toth. Darwyn Cooke, meshed alot of these styles into his own distinctive retro style - which was especially evident in New Frontier. Speaking of which, one of my absolute favorite comics issues as kid was a retelling of the origin of the Justice League in JLA #144, which featured guest stars galore. I re-read that one a bunch of times. Got a feeling Darwyn did too. As far as I know, it has never been reprinted. Check it out and get back to me.
