Man-Bat Enters the Tomb of Dracula

I was always creeped out by the concept of Dracula and Nosferatu when I was a kid.  The idea of an immortal creature that could transform into animals and prowled the night in search of victims to bite was suitably scary to me.  These days, when I think of vampires, my mind goes to too many movies featuring societies filled with overly primped effete bloodsuckers brooding and falling in love.  It seems that something has been lost with this new generation of the undead.

  1. Boy, I'll second that! Every time I see a picture of those silly dweebs from those inane "Twilight" movies I think to myself, "Bela Lugosi would have eaten you for breakfast!"

  2. Adam Sandler said it best, in HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, John (after seeing a thinly-disguised TWILIGHT clip): "This is how we are represented? Unbelievable!"

  3. The first comic book that started my collection was House of Mystery featuring I.....Vampire, back in 1982. Andrew Bennett, the Vampire anti-hero, was still chasing Mary (some vampire chick) across time, and they ended up in Jack the Ripper's 18th century London. That issue gave me nightmares (my mother brought it for me), but it has remained one of my favorite comics that I owned. I really think with the elements of time travel, vampires, anti-heroes, etc., I....Vampire could definitely be made into a hit film.

  5. Yeah no kidding Ross. Oh how the mighty have fallen. The term vampire used to only be spoken in hushed tones and whispers? Now, thanks to Twilight they're basically jokes, and are gonna' take good amount of time and careful rehabilitation to wipe that the Twilight stink away.

Cool concept though, and loving the Scott Eaton Man-Bart pic you choose. He's come a long way form his early days, that's for sure.

  6. @Anonymous: A few years ago, when I was in the hospital, a nurse asked me if I would mind letting a med student take my blood instead of her. I agreed, but I had second thoughts when I saw the student's ID badge: "Bennett, Andrew."

  7. @Dale Bagwell: "Man-Bart?" I know it was a typo, but now I want to see a Man-Bat/Simpsons crossover.

  9. I've long had a fantasy story in my head featuring Batman, Blade, Dr. Spektor and Mr. Monster vs. a group of vampires led by Marvel Comic's version of Dracula.

Regarding the Twilight stories, I never could figure out what the down side to being a vampire was in the Twilight "universe". And another thing, if you were immortal like the male lead in Twilight, would you go back to high school?

  11. Ah, if only I could get the second "Realm Hunter" story arc* published; in that story I use not only the familiar Western vampires of which Dracula is the best-known example, but just about every other type of vampire that I could learn anything about from jiang-shih to estries. And they're all very decidedly evil, dangerous creatures. Too often these days vampires are presented as sympathetic; I'd much rather they were frightening. These are called horror movies for a reason!

I echo what the Other Bob said about "Man-Bart." If you can pull it off, you really should do it. Also, I long ago suggested teaming Man-Bat up with Spider-Man during the latter's "six-armed" period, and this is probably as good a time as any to mention it again.

*Curious persons can click on my name to see about the first arc.
