I loved when Amazing Man was introduced in the pages of
All-Star Squadron. I always thought that The Absorbing Man had one of the coolest power sets and it was great to see a hero with similar abilities. There have been a couple of attempts to revive the character in modern times with new versions, but they haven't really stuck. Hopefully that won't dissuade writers from trying again because I think that Will Everett still has a lot of untapped potential.
Wasn't the All-Star version named for some Golden Age DC artist/writer?
ReplyDeleteRoy Thomas proved his genius in creating Amazing Man.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I would have loved to see Will Everett and Amazing Man on Smallville! With the other All-Stars. Maybe Legends of Tomorrow will be the place...?
Also one of the few black heroes who hasn't been given a criminal background.
ReplyDeleteCary- Not quite, but close. He was named after Bill Everett, a writer/artist best known for having created the Sub-Mariner for Timely/Marvel, but who also created a Golden Age character called Amazing Man for a company called Centaur. I'm not sure if he did any work for D.C./National.
ReplyDeleteNow I want to see one of these 'Mazing Man versus Absorbing Man.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that, John, because now I want to see 'Mazing Man vs Forbush Man!
ReplyDeleteForbush Man vs. Capt. Klutz!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing Man was a great creation, and Creel is a cool villain. I'd love to see this.
ReplyDeleteAnimal, vegetable, mineral superheroes and villains. 1. Animal Man 2. ??? 3. Amazing Man. The closest I could think of for 2 would be Jason Woodrue and he doesn't really fit the description. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteAnother great costume design by Ordway.

Back in their original run, didn't the Doom Patrol battle a character called
'the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man'?
The only vegetable-based superhero characters I can think of offhand are Poison Ivy, Swamp Thing, and Bushroot (from Darkwing Duck).
ReplyDeleteOther plant-based villains: Ramulus fought against the Golden-Age Sandman, and the All-Star Squadron; Blackbriar Thorn[e?], a druid who'd become rather wooden, fought various DC heroes.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing is other than Bushroot and Absorbing Man we've only come up with DC characters. If we had a zoologically-oriented DC villain, though then those three could make a team.
ReplyDelete@ Bob Greenwade:
ReplyDeleteHow about that Silver Age LSH foe, Jungle King? He was suppposed to have zoo-empathic powers. Or maybe even an amnesiac Beast Boy (Duplicate Boy's friend and fellow superhero from the planet Llorn)!
errr-actually I think Beast Boy and Duplicate Boy were from Lallor. :)

There are plenty of "zoologically-oriented DC villains": Catwoman, Cheetah (multiple versions), the Hyena, Catman,...
ReplyDeleteMake it happen, screw attack!
ReplyDeleteGroot is vegetable based. And there's Bob The Angry Flower...
