Even though I took my super-heroes very seriously when I was growing up, I did enjoy it when comic companies were able to poke fun at themselves. Marvel's
Not Brand Ecch and the all-humor issue of
What If? were fun reads. DC had Ambush Bug to point out the absurdities of a life in the DCU and as a comic character in general. I always got a kick out of his appearances and I loved watching Henry Winkler voicing him in the final episode of
Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Has he been back in comics recently? I'd love to see the Bug's reaction to the New 52.
Does it bear pointing out that spiders and ticks are not insects, but arachnids? Of course not! I doubt Irwin would care.
ReplyDeleteI don't recognize all of the characters here, of course, but it's fun to see Ambush Bug here. If any character deserves to pop up (pun intended) on these pages now and again, it's him.
And I do note that you have "Insects Incorporated!" as a tag here. I hope that means that you hope to eventually revisit this group (such as it is). Maybe Bumblebee and the Tick will relent.... :)
I guess I could have called them the Bug Bunch and avoided confusion... I tag all the teams so folks can find them later. Bumblebee and the Tick definitely have their own appearances coming up though...
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that, like most groupings you don't have the characters listed on the cover. ;)
ReplyDeleteI could see Ambush Bug and The Tick teaming up.
Ambush Bug is currently a street reporter for DC's Channel 52 News... (rolls eyes)
Remember kids: if it ain't broke, break it, then put it back together completely unrecognizable! That's The New 52 way!
Is this the first time you've used any of the Archie/MLJ heroes? I don't recall seeing any before this, but at least we get two of them in one cover to make up for lost chances.
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit of a stretch to call the Web an insect (more of an insect by-product, to be technical). They had one other called Firefly (not to mention Fly Girl), but he was fairly obscure.
Still no respect for the Red Bee and I guess that since Ant-Man has a movie coming out he's too "Big" for groups.
ReplyDeleteOh, heaven forbid anyone point out the absurdities of the New 52! We can't have fun comics; they must be violent and serious!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I dislike the new 52, I have read a few of them. At the back of each comic they have a two page news blurp from "Channel 52", reminiscent of the old Daily Planet blurps. Ambush Bug is an on the street reporter for channel 52, but he no longer breaks the fourth wall. (The sports guy is the old pre crisis Superman character Varstok). Channel 52 is one of the few things I like about the new 52.
ReplyDeleteThrowing in my two cents to the New 52 debate, the only comics published DC I've read in the past few years have been Multiversity and Astro City.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of the unspeakable, Marvel resurrected the Wasp's original costume... in the Ultimate line-up. They turned it into some usurper's PVC fetish suit and, sadly, that's the only way I can imagine it now.
Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteAs I understand it, Ambush Bug is a travelling correspondent for "Channel 52." A 21st century version of the old Direct Currents newsletter that used to be published in all DC books of the Seventies and Eighties.
ReplyDeleteTed Kord probably would have been willing to join. I'm guessing that the Tick didn't join because of the Arachnid/Insect distinction in which case Arthur could join the team. Maybe Atom Ant would be willing to join. I can't think of a good Marvel representative.
