The Doom Patrol and The Silver Surfer

The Doom Patrol is a title and concept that DC likes to return to and revamp an a regular basis.  In my opinion, the farther that they stray from the classic team, the less it works.  I don't mind when they add extra members, but I prefer the original cast, Cliff, Larry, Rita and the Chief, to be part of the mix.

  1. They had such a perfectly encapsulated storyline in the 60s, ending with a tragic but heroic death. Frankly they would have been better served if DC had stopped right there.

  2. I think they should reboot the characters but keep it in the past where they worked best. And stop trying to modernize them. Unless you have another Grant Morrison stashed somewhere. And I never expected to see Hatemonger on pne of these covers. Ross you out=do yerself every time!

  3. Cool team-up!

The Doom Patrol, the Secret Six, The Invaders and The Justice Society to me are all books that only work in their time period. They're not really timeless properties. So trying to update and relaunch the brand just doesn't work. I get keeping the copyright and brand going, but just set the stories in the past and I'll be fine.

  4. For me, Grant Morrison's version is the classic one, but I can see why others might not wanna go that rabbit-hole of sheer bug-house wierdness.
I hope if they ever make a film, Crazy Jane shows up! I thought she was a lot more interesting than a woman who just gets real tall.

  5. That's why I wanna leave 'em in the past. If you're not going the Grant Morrison route you'll just be waisting the opportunity. Grant's run succeeded because he embraced the epic weirdness that lay underneath their slightly camp (for the sixties anyway) exterior. If you treat them as a wanna be FF/X-Men type, you've lost the plot and may as well give up.

  6. Grant Morrison's run WAS a needless attempt to modernize them!

    Nuff said.
