I love a good western and these guys are two of my favorite heroes from the genre. It's too bad that both of them have had recent films that failed to do them justice, but I don't think that will hold them back. Both are too iconic and plain tough to be set back by a misstep on the silver screen.
Hi Ross, I'm not sure if you know or follow the videoblogs of Comicbook Girl 19 on Youtube(she is hilarious and incredibly smart on her analysis of the comics and the industry) but she has a running critique on how the current "formula" that hollywood is using to ensure a "box office smash" is ruining comic book films. She argues that Iron Man 3, Lone Ranger, Wolverine and recently Enders Game were all forced to fit inside this "corporate formula box" that does not work (what was a stupid kid doing in Iron Man 3? To appeal to Disney demographics, that's what!). Studios are afraid to make unique films with unique interpretations of characters now, because the corporate feel certain elements MUST be in the film so it can be marketed to every sector and clear a 80 million bucks opening night. It's sad, cuz Jonah Hex should have been a quiet, low sci-fi, eerie/bizarre film. Instead, it was a silly blockbuster type epic, that bombed.
ReplyDeleteI can't say I disagree with any of that!
ReplyDeleteAnother great cover. There's definitely a Clint Eastwood/Stephen King's Gunslinger vibe going on here. And by the way, when are they gonna get around to putting the Gunslinger on film, anyway?
ReplyDeleteI don't think Ron Howard is the guy for the job, no offense...maybe that guy that did Watchmen.
Cool cover.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of Westerns...maybe not so much a fan of Western comics. For a very long time, I held on to the comic book that came with my Lone Ranger action figure. I read and re-read that until it fell apart.
I will probably pick up Hex one day on DVD.
I kinda want to see The Lone Ranger, too. It won't be Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels...but hopefully it won't be Clinton Spillsbury from the 1980 version...
Gotta say, I love how you use images of John Wayne. Are there any images of Clint Eastwood's cowboys? That would be kinda cool to see...
I have an idea for another comic cover. Picture this: "John Carter of Mars and Tarnsman of Gor". What'd you say to that?
ReplyDeleteWho's Tarnsman of Gor?
ReplyDeleteInteresting fact:
ReplyDeleteThe Lone Ranger was created right here in the Motor City.
It took them four years. But, you finally got your wish, namesake.
ReplyDeleteP.S.---How did you like Idris Elba in the title role?
