I'm a little surprised that these two have not met already, it seems like a natural pairing. I've always loved Guardian's costume, it's definitely one of the best flag-based outfits in comics. His death was a shock back in those pre-internet spoiler days - but like so many other heroes, he got better.
Awesome cover! Perhaps Captain Canuck could join Alpha Flight next.
ReplyDeleteI was about to suggest the same thing!
ReplyDeleteBetter yet, how about Captain Canuck with Captain America?
ReplyDeleteIn my entire life I have only seen 1 Captain Canuck comic back in the 80s when I was a kid I got it from a flea market as I recall so I really don't know much about him except for the whole Canada thing.
ReplyDeleteI think Captain Canuck was created was Richard Comely, who started self-publishing his book in the mid-70's. After an early interruption, it continued until about 1981 or so and ended after 13 issues and a special. It was published in color, so it's kind of a shame that it disappeared just as the American color independents (Eclipse, Pacific, Capital, First, etc.) were just starting. It could have benefited from the sense of synergy at that time.
ReplyDeleteThere have been multiple attempts to revive the character since the early 1990's by multiple independent publishers. During the course of the new stories other people have taken up the Captain Canuck identity, customizing the costume with the maple leaf image being the one consistent visual element. The image used here looks like the original. I can't if it's drawn by Comely, though. One odd bit of trivia: late in the original run there was an issue with pin-ups by fan professionals including one by Dave Sim which must have been done shortly after he started publishing "Cerebus". I wish I had the earliest issues to see if there were letters or artwork from John Byrne when he was still working at Charlton.
If memory serves Guardian was never really dead. Merely transported to another planet in an alternate past. There, he was befriended by race of sentient cephalopods who (somehow) got him back to the late 20th/early 21st century. In the process of which, an enemy impersonatorused that particular backstory to infiltrate the group!
