I like the idea of a
Manchurian Candidate type of superhero team. That is to say, a group of heroes that don't even realize that they are part of a covert team until they hear a secret phrase that springs them all into action. Not only would you have the fun of high-stakes action, there would also be the ongoing mystery of how the team was formed in the first place.
Wow, I have not seen the image of Firehawk since Crisis of Infinite Earths and a "Post-Crisis" issue of Firestorm I think. She was a beautiful creation that DC left by the wayside like so many other heroes. sigh. Oh well, maybe its just me being nostalgic for the early 1990s. Does anyone know what happened to Plastique, another Firestorm character who was originally a villain but later turned hero?
ReplyDeleteI think Plastique was killed in an issue of John Ostrander's Suicide Squad.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a team of sleeper agent super-heroes! I bet you could make something of it! :)
ReplyDeletewhat, no Hawk from DC's Hawk & Dove?
ReplyDeleteNever mind the "sleeper agent" idea (which is clever); I love how you fit a bunch of heroes together who all have the word "hawk" in their names. It's a shame you couldn't have fit in Nighthawk (from Champions). That would have made this team a true Magnificent Seven.
ReplyDeleteIs this a 2 parter?
ReplyDeleteNo, but maybe I'll do a sequel one of these days.
ReplyDeleteAWESOME!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite - unsung DC heroes is Hawkman.
Which makes me wonder what exactly DC is thinking. Both Jay and Carter got their girl back in the day. I'm pretty sure that Carter and Shiera were the "first" hero couple. As reincarnated Egyptian Pharaoh and Queen. So they were also the first hero couple of "race" as well.
It's disappointing that this new reboot has eliminated marriage completely.
But, I rant. This is an awesome cover. I love the Hawk theme! Hawkman and Hawkeye especially!
A sequel? That would be an awesome place to bring in Nighthawk. It would be just like him to create a team like this, so he can oppose and destroy VIPER... at least, if you can find appropriate artwork (there's not much of him extant these days, though a Google Images search shows a fair selection of good bits).
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I'm a big fan of Nighthawk (at least the 70's version), hard to imagine him getting along well with Hawkman. Now that I think of it, which version of Hawkman? I guess they did that in Zero Hour, but it's hard to keep it straight.
ReplyDeleteAnon -- I don't think you're thinking of the same character that I am, considering that Nighthawk (from Champions) was created in 2005.
ReplyDelete@Turntable (and Bill): Plastique was in Suicide Squad, but she survived. She became a recurring character in "Captain Atom" and then "Extreme Justice". After that she disappeared for almost a decade, but she came back after "Infinite Crisis". She was one of a jillion characters who appeared in the weekly series "52" and since most of that series was meant to explain what went on between the end of "Infinite Crisis" and the beginning of the "One Year After" stories, I'm guessing you'll find her somewhere between mid-2006 and mid-2007 but I couldn't tell you where. It wasn't in "Brave and The Bold", "Shadowpact" or the Spectre tie-ins. I wasn't reading much else from DC after that.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't Secret Avengers follow the premise you describe for this Hawk team?
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming the trigger word isn't Hawk. They'd all be triggered every time someone called them by their names...
ReplyDelete...or any time they walked into a pawnshop. Good point, Alexander.
ReplyDeleteWhat? No Darkhawk?
ReplyDeleteInteresting concept. You could do this with all of the similarly-themed characters, like those using flame, ice, a bat, spiders, et al.
ReplyDeleteOh well, maybe its just me
ReplyDeleteI say the secret mastermind is Psi-Hawk from Marvel's once-New Universe (a 1980's imprint that didn't last too long).
ReplyDeleteWho called them together has not been answered but I think it is obvious - HAWK!
ReplyDelete¿Where is darkhawk?
ReplyDeleteJust saw this. Clearly the masterminds who brought them together are a retired Korean War army doctor and a deputy from a small, spooky town in Washington state, named for the dual mountains.
ReplyDelete@AWW: either that or a fighter jet pilot from one of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's less successful TV puppet shows.
