The Creeper and Daredevil in "Media Blitz!"
I always thought that the Creeper was cool. I really liked that his alter ego, Jack Ryder, was a TV tabloid journalist - that seemed like a great springboard for story ideas. The Creeper was one of the characters missing from DC's New 52 that I had been hoping to see reappear. It seems he has now, in name at least, in the pages of Katana. I've seen some pages featuring a Creeper that looks more like a parade dragon than the Ditko designed hero of the previous continuity. I haven't read the stories though, so I don't know if that will be the final form of the character. Can anyone tell me what's up?
I think he's basically a villain now. And to be honest, he might work out better this way. I never quite got him as a hero. Something just seemed off and unconvincing. I think he might be more interesting as an adversary.
ReplyDeleteI can already tell I'll not be wasting any of my time or money on the "new" DC, whatever stupid name they call it.
ReplyDeleteYou know, it's probably best not to mess too much with classic Ditko character. And the Creeper is so different in approach, and so striking in appearance, that he is unique and instantly recognizable. Why mess with that?
Jeff H.
He's still Jack Ryder, a somewhat sleazy tabloid journalist, and recently the character technically died but was saved at the last minute by a mysterious force that seems to have turned him into the Creeper. The thing is, Jack isn't aware that he's the Creeper. The Creeper seems to be a spirit of chaos almost, and is essentially just using (or "riding") Ryder's body to take physical form. The new Creeper seems to be a kind of Japanese spirit and has a definite hate-on for Katana and her Soul-Taker blade.
ReplyDeleteA lot of the New 52 stuff is really good, and this is coming from a guy who resisted it for about 2 years because I missed the classic characters. But the story telling and art in many of the titles is really good.
Interesting... at least it sounds like there's a chance for a more traditional Creeper down the road. Now where is Rex Mason?
ReplyDeleteMetamorpho cab live on in your site, Ross. Don't forget that.
ReplyDeleteThe Creeper has long been one of my favorite characters, despite some pretty shoddy treatment by DC over the years. I'm surprised with how involved Giffen's been with the company recently, he couldn't manage to salvage the concept and character somehow for DC's "Nu"-52.
ReplyDeletePre-Crisis, the Creeper was a favorite of mine, especially in the original Ditko series. I haven't liked a thing that's been done with him since 1985, starting with that DC Comics Presents team-up with Superman by Giffen.
ReplyDeleteThat's the trouble with Steve Ditko's very original and nearly always created in the 60's and 70's characters have to move with the times great shame because I personally think that the likes of The Question, Shade and The Creeper and the Blue Beetle are some of the greatest Heroes ever with Steve's philosophy and views are still valid today.
ReplyDeleteLove me some Creeper. Could you team him up with The Badger, Ross? Please?
