Conan Vs. He-Man in: "The Mountains of Madness!"
Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger is out of politics and back in the movies, I keep hearing news of him returning to some of his most famous roles. He is slated to appear in the next Terminator installment and will reteam with Danny DeVito for Triplets, a sequel to Twins. The project that piques my interest the most, though, is the next Conan film. At first I thought it sounded crazy that he would return to the role after all these years, but the more that I think about it, the more it seems to me that it might be very cool to see a tale of an older, battle weary barbarian. I hope that the script lives up to the story potential.
;)
ReplyDeleteI'd say Schwarzenegger is returning to acting...except I don't think he ever stopped...his last role was a "series" as California governor...HA!
Conan and Claw the unconquered!
ReplyDeleteI loved Claw the Unconquered when I discovered all the back issues in someones garage sale in the 1990. What the heck? DC canceled a lot of gems during their "implosion" in the late 1970s. Rima The Jungle Girl was another one.
ReplyDeleteI am LOVING these! LOL
ReplyDeleteCool! This won't be the last cover with your Conan art...
ReplyDeleteDidn't Robert E. Howard actually write some Conan novels with the hero in his later years? I haven't actually read any of them (it's on my personal "to-do" list, probably shortly after finishing with the Doctor Who fan film I'm currently involved in), but I somehow have the idea that he did write such stories. (Maybe I'm thinking of Tarzan....)
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, I think this weekend two-parter would make for a ripping good tale.
Great job Ross! Keep 'em coming!
ReplyDeleteThere was a magazine in the 70's called "Conan the King", where Conan was older and his son went on the adventures. I think if they followed this premise, it could work.
ReplyDelete@Bob Greenwade: The books you're thinking of are "Conan of Aquilonia" and "Conan of the Isles". Conan's pulp magazine stories were collected into paperbacks in the 50's and 60's, but after Roy Thomas (who loved the paperbacks) had success with the comic book adaptation, Ace Books decided to bring the stories back into print with the stories arranged in order chronologically according to when they occurred in Conan's life instead of when they were originally written or originally published. They included stories from the 60's completed by L. Sprague De Camp and Lin Carter from outlines and partial manuscripts left behind by Howard, plus original stories by them and Bjorn Nyborg in addition to all of Howard's originals. There have been more books written since then, but the 12 Ace titles follow his life from escaped teen-age slave (ignorant and superstitious) to barbarian king (worldly and cunning). De Camp and Carter wrote the stories in "...Aquilonia" and "...The Isles"; Howard only hinted at Conan's fate in the earlier stories.
ReplyDeleteRobert E Howard did write one novel-length Conan story, "The Hour of the Dragon." Well worth reading (as is pretty much anything by Howard, an amazingly diverse writer). Beware of those Ace books, a lot of it is junk added by far lesser writers. You're better off with the recent Del Rey Conan collections, which are all Howard.

Yeah, but the Sixties paperbacks had those cool Frazetta covers!
ReplyDeleteThe character Zorn from the tv comedy Son of Zorn is sort of a Mash up of these two characters!-Tom Zilla
ReplyDeleteHa - good point
ReplyDeleteHow about He-Man vs. Deadpool?
