Justice League of America Vs. The Avengers (And More!)

I wanted to do something special for an anniversary issue, so I figured what better than a 100-Page Giant?  I used to absolutely devour those when I was growing up.  In addition to the main feature, they would include reprints of classic tales as well.   Those served as my introduction to many characters and creators that I had been previously unaware of, and really opened a whole new world for me.  Add in the special features like puzzle pages and text stories, and a single issue would keep me entertained for an entire evening.  Those were the days!

  1. The scary part was that I read that issue of JLA in my first subscription to DC comics. I love your mash ups. And I would really love to read the Alfred Pennyworth, Agent of Shield story.

  2. This is just awesome! Oh, if this issue had really seen print when I was 8 years old...

Thanks for all of your efforts on these covers, which never fail to please.

  4. Congratulations on another milestone!

Great cover for the big 300. Looks great! "Alfred Pennyworth, Agent of Shield" was probably my favorite part though.

  5. You know, I wonder if either of the Big Two are looking at these and thinking, "Hey, these are some PHENOMENAL ideas for stories! Get on it and hire this guy!" or, "Do we have enough money? Do we have a lawsuit?" Keep us posted!

  6. Aw, frak. This is just 50 kinds of awesome. (One of my novels features the concept that one of the main uses for cheap travel between alternate universes will be buying and selling genre media, like the fourth season of classic Trek. If I ever write a sequel, I will be doing a shout-out to your comics.)

  7. I WANT THIS COMIC! Serious coolness ... we're talking Fonzie-cool here, Ross. :-)

  8. If there's not a future cover for Alfred Pennyworth, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., I'm going to be sorely disappointed in you, Ross.

  9. I second that! He and Jarvis can take on Hydra & the H.I.V.E. together. Ross, make it so!

  10. Bravo Ross, this time, no really, I mean it this time, THIS TIME you really outdid yourself, and I nominate this as your BESTEST ONE!!! (that is...until I see what you pulled off for Saturday).

  11. Thanks! You'll see Alfred as well as Robotman/Ultron covers in the future, I promise.

  12. Yeah, I think it's pretty universal: we all want to see Alfred Pennyworth, Agent of SHIELD.

Of course the JLA and Avengers had an actual meet-up a few years ago, but this cover gives us a classic look as if it had been going on in the 60s or early 70s. That's a whole different angle on things.

And looking at that image of the Star-Spangled Kid and Stripsey makes me want to see them team up with Captain America.

Increasingly, too, we want DC and/or Marvel to hire you as an editor. I think a combined steady publication of this very title would be excellent, and would likely mark my return to buying comics.

Also, @Lizard: I hope you'll also consider reading my novels before you write a sequel. There might be something there for you. (I've even once suggested to Ross that he might do something with Bear Waters, the hero of my books... though with only two available images that's likely to be a very tall order!)

  13. You'll see Cap and SSK share a cover eventually...

  14. Captain America and the Star-Spangled Kid are so obvious its a almost a crime it wasn't among your first ones. But all will be forgiven when we see it!

  15. Dave sez,

I was just reading that the Warner Bros. Lego DC is now licensing Lego Marvel - is it possible that Lego DC-Marvel or Lego DC VS. Marvel will be too far away? So JLA/Avengers isn't that outrageous!

I'd like to see more classic team-ups from DC and Marvel. Like the ones here - Silver Age team-ups...

  16. I remember reading that some iteration of Alfred (Earth-1 or Earth-2, most likely) had a relationship with Mlle. Marie during WWII and may have had some connection to the early days of the OSS. So that Agent of SHIELD bit isn't so much of a stretch.

Oh, and it's not at all shocking that each of the Avengers from that classic Kirby cover would eventually be drawn in full-face portraits by Byrne but it's still an excellent attention to detail in tracking each of them down. Brilliant.

  17. Not only did I love those classic 100 page issues too, but the one you based STF#300 on was my first JLA issue!
    Keep up the great work!

  18. What a treat- you perfectly captured those great 100 pagers. The B&B 100 page issues were real treats to me (as were the Batman and Detective issues). Congrats on the anniversary!

  19. I'm a huge fan of your stuff, and echo all the praise seen in the comics above. I presume you've seen Busiek/Perez's JLA/AVENGERS crossover, which was a pretty brilliant evocation of the team up we'd all waited thirty years to see... a much, much better one than the various plots and ideas that Conway, et al had contrived before.

Anyway, I love your covers, and will close by saying, I bought the original issue of JLA that this cover is pulled from off a spinner rack when I was like 11. I wish I still owned it. And, like you, I really enjoyed the 100 Page Super Spectaculars, for all the reasons you so beautifully articulate.

    Keep 'em coming!

  21. Sweet cover. I'd like to see Rick Jones whip the tar out of Snapper Carr!

  22. Hey, congrats on turning 300. THIS IS SUPER-TEAM FAMILY!!!!;)

Awesome, awesome cover as usual. I agree with the other comments here, a story like the main one would've have been all shades of awesome if it were real.

  23. This comic is a dream come true. I'd buy it in a heartbeat, would've then, would do so more now. Thanks for the utterly lovely image.

  24. Congratulations on #300. I can see you were saving up for this one.

And despite all the greatness of it, the Pennyworth bit struck me especially, and I see by comments I'm hardly alone.

60¢ ... Reminds me how I had my budget for my monthly dose of 12¢ Marvels and how hard it was to scrape up those extra quarters for the summer annuals.

  25. The best part about coming to this website is when Ross uses a cover of a comic you brought in your childhood. On few occasions I have come here and tears have been brought to my eyes as the hint of a long lost cover brings back cherished memories of simple, innocent times. sigh.
