Doctor Light and Photon

Here are two great character that we don't see enough of.  Monica Rambeau has been known as Captain marvel, Pulsar and Photon, and has served time in The Avengers and Nextwave.  With all the Avengers titles floating around these days, hopefully she will find a permanent home on one of the teams and get her chance to shine again.  I was a big fan of the new female Doctor Light when she was introduced in Crisis on Infinite Earths, and I really thought she was going to be a bigger star.  Sadly, other than a blink-and-you-miss-it stint on The Justice League, DC hasn't really seemed to know what to do with her since then.  I still think that she has a lot of potential, so hopefully she will get another chance in the New 52.

  1. If there's any Dr. Light completists out there, I know that she was briefly in the John Arcudi/Tang Eng Huat "Doom Patrol" series. A billionaire named Thayer Jost had bought the rights to the DP name then had a falling out with Cliff. So, Jost carried on by hiring Changeling and three JLE alumni: Elongated Man, Dr. Light and Metamorpho. They only appeared in issues #4-6 (2002).

Monica's much trickier with a handful of one shots whose indicia titles don't always match the cover titles (which makes ordering them online a headache) and as you pointed out, the multiple name changes.

For too many years now both Marvel and DC have been throwing away opportunities to use decent characters like these by consigning them to an ever-growing pool of designated C-listers who appear only in crowd scenes in 'event' mini-series. You know what the real difference between an A-lister and a C-lister is? An imaginative writer.

  3. Dave sez,

What if Julius Schwartz and Roy Thomas had issued a memo with very strict, tight guidelines on creating new characters?

    Like, no new, throw-away characters.

  6. @Cathy and Dave: Actually, Julie Schwartz was known for telling his writers that if they wanted to revive old characters from 20 years ago, they also had to create new characters for other writers to revive 20 years in the future.
