The Spectre and Doctor Who
Tom Baker is still my favorite incarnation of Doctor who, although I quite liked the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant versions as well. I'm not sure what it is about the latest Doctor, Matt Smith, but he just misses the mark for me. I recently watched the newest Christmas Special, and by the end I was hoping for another regeneration, but it looks like Smith will be staying in the role a bit longer. It's not a deal breaker for me, because the show is still filled with a ton of imagination and Dr. Who has one of the best rogues galleries outside of comics.
Has the Spectre appeared in the New 52 yet? I don't think I have heard anything yet, but I am sure that it is only a matter of time. When he does show up, it will be interesting to see what his appearance will look like and who his host will be. Let's hope he will be goatee-free this time around.
It's funny, if you'd have asked me a while ago who my favorite modern Doctor is, I'd probably say 10, but after rewatching the modern series again, I think 9's really tied up there. I think if there's one problem with 11, is that he's either a twelve year-old or a raging madman and no in-between. Still does a good job, mind you, I just blame that more on the writing, really.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Spectre has appeared in the New 52, specifically in The Phantom Stranger #0. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure he didn't have a goatee either.
He did not have a goatee. It is Jim Corrigan again.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved Tom Baker, as well as Patrick Troughton. Of the revival series, 11 is hands down my favorite. I enjoy 10 in small doses, but he really seems to have just two emotions (paralleling Jay Kay's criticism of 11 above, I suppose). It all comes down to taste -- and really, every doctor has been excellent. (Well, I didn't like 6 when he appeared -- I turned it off soon thereafter -- and I've never seen 7, though he seems like he was rather nice given the budget restrictions of the era.)
ReplyDeleteThe Spectre's costume design is pretty far out, especially when you consider that he first appeared in the 40s. I used to think he wore a white suit but no, he's just a pale flesh corpse in green underpants, with gloves, boots and a cape, right? Lots of heroes wear their underpants on the outside as part of their costumes -- but is there anybody else for whom the underpants are basically the costume itself? (Even Tarzan and Bwana Beast got a loincloth.)
Namor is pretty much a briefs only guy.
ReplyDeleteThere's no shortage of trunks, shorts and loincloths in comics. In the 40's and 70's you also got a lot of odd peek-a-boo styles (Black Condor, Cosmic Boy). But look at the Thing, early Hulk, Him (the early incarnation of Adam Warlock), Kamandi, etc. I had read somewhere that Godwulf (an old Deathlok character) was supposed to have been naked but the editor said "Sorry".
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see the Spectre hosted by the African-American Jim Corrigan from the early 1970's version of JIMMY OLSEN.
ReplyDeleteIf only to give new meaning to the phrase... "soul brother."
