I have to admire Bill Watterson for ending Calvin and Hobbes while it was still at the peak of its quality and never looking back. His refusal to licence his characters out to other mediums is a rare move which has also preserved the strip's integrity. That said, I would love to see him return one day. Calvin and Hobbes was my favorite comic strip ever and it would be great to see what Watterson would have to say about them after such a long hiatus.
I really would like to see a feature-length Calvin and Hobbes movie, though.

My absolute favorite of all your great covers. Thanks for the big smile!
ReplyDeleteI cannot be sure if it is from him or it is just an homage, but I recently saw a piece where it seems that Calvin grew up, got married, had a daughter, and now she has Hobbes. It was very sweet and exactly what you figure would happen, did.
ReplyDeleteit's kind of too bad about the refusal to commercialise calvinand Hobbes
ReplyDeleteI loved the strip and have all the reprint trades. But it certainly would have made a great cartoon or animated feature. But for whatever reason...it is what it is.
Genius!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me laugh in spite of myself. Totally hilarious!
ReplyDeleteGreat !
ReplyDeleteThanks, guys! I like this one too.
ReplyDeleteThis cover is definitely one of your best!
ReplyDeleteUnbelievably cool.
ReplyDeleteWell, Ross, you warned me that this was particularly offbeat. Not only is the pairing wonderfully quirky, but so is the assemblage of the cover.
ReplyDeleteHere I am, about to head off to bed and I just suddenly remembered that I hadn't checked in here yet. I'm glad I did. What a great way to finish the day.
B! Rilliant! Amazing!
ReplyDeletePerfect.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous-- You weren't imagining that update. It was covered by NPR and you can read about it here:

Yes, I loved the "Hobbes and Bacon" strips done over at PANTS ARE OVERRATED. You can find those here:

That's the entire run, as the strip has gone on hiatus; with any luck the Heyerman brothers might revisit this idea (and by "any luck" I mean something that'll keep Universal Press Syndicate from going after them...)
Now THIS one I like! ALWAYS great to see Calvin and Hobbes!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I've taken a stab at another STF cover of my own. You can see it here:

.....so whats the record for most comments? cuz this one seems up there....!
ReplyDeleteThat would be Doctor fate and Doctor Strange with 22 comments.
ReplyDeleteOpus from Bloom County with.........? Please make that happen!
ReplyDeleteOpus is indeed featured on an upcoming cover...
ReplyDeleteCalvin... Hobbes... Have you ever danced with the devil by the pale moonlight?
ReplyDeleteI think a Calvin and Hobbes II strip would work if Calvin was Calvin Jr with a new stuffed animal and occasional interaction with original Hobbes.
