The New Teen Titans Vs. The New Warriors

Here are two great teams that I wish could recapture some of the magic they had in their prime.  The Teen Titans never quite recovered from the loss of Perez and Wolfman for me, despite some very nice work from creators like Tom Grummett, Geoff Johns and Dan Jurgens.  I really like the new Young Justice cartoon, and was hoping the New DCU Teen Titans series would take its cues from that, but they went in another direction that bears very little resemblance to the team of my youth.  The New Warriors have never quite bounced back since the events of Civil War.  At least Speedball is out of his Penance phase.  These two teams are among the most revamped and relaunched properties in comics, so maybe I just have to wait for the next inevitable incarnations and see if those strike more of a chord with me.

  1. well...it seemed to me that Marv Wolfman was partly to blame for the decline of the The New Teen Titans. Maybe with the denouement of the Terra betrayl saga, he sort of burnt out. He created a wonderful character name Kole (chrystal powers) just to have her killed in the Crisis of Infinite Earth's series. Then he had Jericho, another wonderful creation, and comic's firt mute character, betray the Titans exactly like Terra. By the time that brat Danny Chase and a baby Wildebeest joined the team, I had long abandoned the title. embarrasing. Oh, great cover, Ross!

  2. I have always thought the New Warriors were extremely underrated. In a time when spectacle and character-lacking violence ran supreme, the Warriors held the torch for good comics book plots and well thought out and developed characters.

  4. Nice cover. Any chance you could enlighten us as to where you gathered each image?
I was thinking of Power Pack vs Tiny Titans but PP vs Sugar & Spike is much better.
    LSH vs Guardians of Galaxy?

  5. New Warriors are from a NW cover, most of the Teen Titans are from a NTT cover, and Kid Flash and Changeling are from Who's Who entries.

  6. I thought it was weird that Wally was wearing the Kid Flash colors while Jericho was in the group; Wally retired just before Jericho joined, then became Flash after Crisis.

The NTT cover must have been the one with the DNAgents parody (The RECOMbatants?). Shouldn't the DNAgents face off against Next Men or Gen13?

  7. If you liked the classic NEW WARRIORS, you should check out AVENGERS ACADEMY. It has a few characters in common, but it mostly shares the same sense of wonderfully overheated enthusiasm that NW had back in the early 90s.
