Martian Manhunter and Beta Ray Bill

I thought I would do a cover that featured two of my favorite alien heroes.  This one also gave me a chance to do an all-Walt Simonson cover.  Simonson's art is so effective on larger than life characters because he has the ability to convey energy that just leaps off of the page.  His career has lasted decades and he seems to keep getting better and better.  I got a kick out of his cameo during the banquet scene at the end of Thor.  Walt fit right in with the Asgardian elite!

  2. Dave sez,

    Cool!

I've heard of Beta Ray Bill, but I know absolutely nothing about him.

I will now look him up on Wikipedia...

  4. I can think of no better Husband & Wife writer/artist collaborators out there than The Simonsons. Anyone disagree?

  6. For husband and wife teams, the Foglios rate pretty high. Roy and Dani Thomas are both writers, so I'm not sure if they'd count. And Doris and Boris Vallejo only worked on one children's book that I know of. Would you count Glynis Wein as a colorist? I'm just not sure it's that big a field of competition. Who else is out there as prolific as the Simonsons and Foglios?

  7. Wendy and Richard Pini? Not a prolific, but Elfquest was good comics!

  8. Ross, will we ever see Elfquest here?

  9. Elfquest is a series I have never tried, but it's always looked interesting.

  10. Hey, Ross, for some Simonson rarely-seen goodness, check out this blog :

I only recently discovered the Boba Fett pin-up by Walt. Maybe you'd heard of it before. I think it would work great in a mashup cover (hint, hint!) but I have no idea who Boba could be meeting. Another bounty hunter perhaps?

  12. Simonson is simply one of the best! And this cover is an inspired mash-up! Another great one!

And my thanks to SuperForce for the shout out to my ONCE UPON A GEEK blog.
