There are so many cool Avengers line-ups, I decided they warranted another cover. As I mentioned yesterday, I hope for Avengers film sequels to feature more of their large roster. Unfortunately, because of rights issues, it will be very unlikely that I will see my favorite grouping on the big screen because the era I loved the most was when The Beast was an Avenger. I always felt that he fit in better there than with the X-Men once he evolved into his blue furry state. Of course these days we have Wolverine and now Storm as card carrying Avengers, but that just does not work for me at all - it smacks of a decision made by corporate number crunchers rather than driven by the plot. Don't even get me started on Spider-Man as an Avenger!

Batman and The Avengers - Cap's Kooky Quartet (Retro)

When batman left the Justice League to form The Outsiders, and then, subsequently left The Outsiders as well, I was content with the idea of the Dark Knight being a team-less loner. So imagine how absurd I found it, that at one point, DC had Batman a) back with the Outsiders (on the west coast), b) leading Justice League International & part of the Justice League itself, and c) teaming with Robin and & Superman separately, all at the same time! This was in the late '90's. Its 2010, and he's still pretty much all over the place.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with you on the Beast & Spider-man as Avengers. And Wolverine is on so many teams when does he sleep?
ReplyDeleteBut I love this cover was talking about Cap's Kooky Quartet with some friends just a few days ago. The only reason I read any of that stuff was when they were reprinting old Avengers stories in Marvel Triple Action.
Dave sez,
ReplyDeleteThis is probably my favorite line-up, too, because this is the Avengers I was introduced to when I first started reading comics. The first seed of a Thunderbolts concept!
I like the idea though that The Avengers should be a team like the Justice League, where all your A-list characters are...with Beast being the exception, I would think if you're an X-Man, you stay an X-Man. Or appear "on loan" for a given situation.
But even this line-up breaks the rules - Wanda and Pietro are clearly mutants and should have stayed in the X-Man franchise...Charles should have taken them in...
Love this blog, by the way.
ReplyDeleteI seem to be the only one who loves Spider-Man in The Avengers. Even when I was a kid in the '60s, I thought Spider-Man belonged on the team, his loner status be damned.
Just one question. Who is the Joker's secret partner?
ReplyDeleteRhymes with "Dang"...
