I am usually not a fan of character redesigns that completely overhaul what has gone before. One exception was with Brainiac. When the "new" Brainiac was revealed in the 80's, I was a big fan of the robotic look. Sure it was a huge change from the green-skinned, pink-shirt wearing villain I had come to know, but I thought it was much more imposing and made sense for the character. Later incarnations veered back closer to the original design, but there must still be a lot of fans of the 80's look, as it continues to show up in Brainiac's skull ship and robotic minions.
Yeah, Brainiac's redesign in the '80's was pretty cool. Glad they lost the turned up collar! Ha!
ReplyDeleteI think Ultron is a pretty good riff on Brainiac...
five issues and itll be 800 any special plans for that one also id like queen bee turn avengers into drones or brood taking on jsa or jla
ReplyDelete#800 is an over-sized anniversary issue. Hopefully you will find it to be... magical...
ReplyDeleteThe Champions [RPG] Universe has a villain named Mechanon who was originally a riff on Ultron. Over the years his design has incorporated elements of the updated Brainiac, most notably the gigantic head-shaped ship he uses in AD 3001.
ReplyDeleteIf there's any way to take Mechanon's image off "The Book of the Machine" (or some other source), I think it might be interesting to see him on these pages. He could get into a three-way battle against Brainiac and Ultron, battle Robo-Force, or do any number of other things in his quest to obliterate all organic life.
Yes, Brainiac vs. Ultron! Do it Ross!
ReplyDeleteDid you see Joe Staton's comment about STF #218 today on Facebook?
ReplyDeleteVery cool, Ross! If I may be permitted to make a relevant suggestion, will we ever get to see a future issue of SUPER-TEAM FAMILY featuring Brainiac vs. Ultron, as the two vastly powerful robotic intelligences battle for the title of Supreme Robotic Intelligence, or something like that? :-) Or... how about Brainiac vs. the Borg?
ReplyDeleteAnd if I may make a non-related suggestion: Will a future issue ever give us a team up between Donald Duck and Howard the Duck? I've been waiting to see that one for a while, and now that Disney owns Marvel, this is an *actual* possibility! One can easily argue that the tone between these two anthropomorphic fowl guys are diametrically opposed, but I would then remind such arguers about the coolness that was the team up between the Punisher and Archie Andrews! If *that one* could actually happen... well, the sky's the limit, I say! And hey, it is Disney's fault that Howard was stuck with the burden of wearing pants, so they do sort of owe him one.
Animated Brainiac (archiver of worlds) vs. Ego.
ReplyDeleteBrainiac vs Galactus
Brainiac vs. Ultron...
Yup, saw the Staton comment!
ReplyDeleteBraniac Vs. Ultron does seem like a natural... just gotta find the right images... they are both slated to appear again .
Some interesting pairings with Howard the Duck coming up as well... He and Donald have met once before, as members of Fowl Force, one of my earlier teams...
Ego vs. Mogo in "When Worlds Collide!"
ReplyDelete@Bob Buethe -+1 Bob!
ReplyDeleteThe 80's redesign of Brainiac should have had a longer shelf life. It really gave the character a genuine menace that was lacking in the original design. ... And out of the original run of the Kenner Super Powers line, Brainiac was the only figure I owned.
