Mon-El and Gladiator

Mon-El will be making his live-action debut in the upcoming season of Supergirl.  I am hoping his presence on the show will lead to The Legion of Super-Heroes down the line, but I suspect he will end up being yet another love interest for Kara/Supergirl. I prefer her with Brainiac 5.

Green Lantern and The West Coast Avengers

When The West Coast Avengers first appeared, I thought that it was a great idea.  There were too many members of The Avengers at that time to feature on a single team, so I loves the idea of a second group operating on the other side of the country.  I especially liked the idea of Hawkeye as team leader - he had always claimed that he could do a better job than Cap, so I was glad to see him finally get his chance.  Of course, these days, Marvel has completely overdone the concept, with new Avenger spin-off teams popping up on a regular basis.  It once was a big deal to be granted Avengers membership, now it's hard to think of many Marvel heroes who aren't a part of the team.

Amanda Waller and Nick Fury

Suicide Squad seems to have withstood some harsh reviews and has made over 700 million worldwide, so maybe we will see some sequels after all.  It's the kind of team that can really be changed up from movie to movie, so there are plenty of directions to go in.  I'd like to see Bronze Tiger, Nightshade and Father Craemer show up, three of my favorite characters from the John Ostrander run on the comic series.

Sgt. Rock and War Machine

I'm not sure why Jim Rhodes is getting so dumped on lately.  Not only has he been sidelined in the Marvel films due to the events of Captain America: Civil War, in the comics...

SPOILER alert for those not caught up...

... he has been killed off by Thanos in the Civil War II event!  What did the poor guy do to deserve such treatment?  Is he too close to Iron Man in nature - that can't be it, they keep creating new Iron Man variant characters.  Is his code name no longer considered politically correct?  Like with Bruce Banner, I am hoping this "death" is no permanent, as is the tradition in comics.

Stingray and Aquaman

I am still not sold on Jason Mamoa as Aquaman.  The Justice League footage shown at Comicon was interesting, but Mamoa just doesn't look anything like the character from the comics... not even the hook and beard phase (my least favorite look for Aquaman).  Maybe I just need to see him doing something more heroic instead of simply standing around.  If he rides a giant seahorse in the movie, all will be forgiven!

The Metal Men and Iron Man in "Sheet Metal!"

I tried, mostly in vain, to get my nieces and nephews interested in comics.  I would give them whatever beat up copies or duplicates I had on hand and they gobbled them up but soon moved on to video games and the internet and more modern distractions.  The one title I remember my niece really liking was The Metal Men.  There is something about their simple designs and personalities that really appeal to kids.  I had heard that there was interest in bringing them to the movies and I hope that has not been abandoned - there could be some real potential there.

The Metal Men first crossed paths with Iron Man back in STF #362...

The Tick Meets Plastic Man

The Tick is back in Live action form thanks to Amazon, this time with Peter Serafinowicz in the title role.  I have seen a couple of short clips from the show and I am not sure what to make of it yet.  Serafinowicz looks like he is giving his all but after Patrick Warburton's performance it is hard to accept a new actor in the role.  I'll have to see a full episode before passing judgment.

The Joker and KISS

When I was a kid I loved the band Kiss because they we kind of like superheroes with their whole look and personas.  May favorite was Ace Frehley, the "alien". I even had some Kiss trading cards which had facts about the band members on the backs of them  On Frehley's card, it mentioned that his instrument was "lead guitar"... which I misread as the metal lead.  I figured that being from another planet made him strong enough to lift such a heavy guitar!

Transformers and Steel

John Henry Irons is another character that I'd love to see in live action - done right this time (sorry, Shaq). It looks like we will see Superman's resurrection at some point in Justice League, so that rules out the possibility of a "Reign of Supermen" film, which could have been very cool.  Supergirl on the CW seems like another perfect opportunity to feature Steel, I hope the producers don't pass it up!

Reverse Flash Vs. Venom

I really enjoy The Flash on the CW, but I hope they aren't going to repeat themselves too much.  The "big bad" of the first season was The Reverse Flash, and for season two it was Zoom.  Now in the third season we have Savitar, Kid Flash, Jay Garrick, Rival, and Jesse Quick to look forward to.  Don't get me wrong, that all sounds fun - but we have seen a lot of speedster vs. speedster action on the show thus far and I would like to see some more variety in friends and foes.  Lets see appearances by Mirror Master, Dr. Alchemy, Kilg%re, and Ralph Dibny this year!

Let's hope that these two villains can sort out their differences before the next meeting of their team, The Doppel Gang...

Hawkgirl and Scarlett

Hawkman and Hawkgirl will not be series regulars on this season of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, but I am hoping that we will st least get an appearance or two from them.  Since the Justice Society is supposed to play a focal role, I think the producers would be missing a good opportunity if they didn't show us the JSA/WWII era Hawks.  It would be a good chance to update Cater's helmet, too!

Firebrand and Medusa

Continued from yesterday's cover, we now learn the connection that Firebrand had been hiding.

I have always thought that Medusa was one of the more appealing Marvel super-heroines.  Not only is she royalty and has a cool power, her giant, constantly-moving head of hair keeps her visually interesting.  I can't wait for Marvel to figure out their cinematic Inhumans plans so that we can have a live action version.

All-Star Squadron and The Inhumans

I am glad that the original Justice Society members are poised for some kind of a return due to DC Rebirth.  I hope that also means that the extended cast of characters from All-Star Squadron will make some appearances as well.  Liberty Belle, Amazing man, Commander Steel, Tarantula and many others may not have been official JSA members, but I always enjoyed following their adventures.

This is only Part One of a Two-Part Epic - be sure to come back for the thrilling conclusion tomorrow!

Hong Kong Phooey and Krypto

I was a fan of Hong Kong Phooey as a kid.  what wasn't to like?  A dog that led a double life as a masked karate expert fighting crime hit all the right notes for me.  The show had a great theme song as well.  What really put it over the top was the voice work by Scatman Crothers - so unique amongst saturday morning heroes.

Justice League of America & The Defenders (and more!)

Welcome to STF #1600!  I hope you will indulge a non-cover-related commentary...

The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Stir Crazy... Gene Wilder starred some of my all time favorite films.  I was sorry to hear that he passed away yesterday.  I loved his performances as well as his relationship with Gilda Radner.  I hope they are reunited out there somewhere right now.  Rest in Peace, Gene Wilder  and thank you for all the laughs.

Hercules Vs. Orion

This would be a fun match up.  The sons of Zeus and Darkseid not only each possess incredible strength, they both have a real appreciation for combat - Orion, because he was bred for battle and Hercules because he just really likes fighting.  It wouldn't take much to get them to face off.

The Demon and The Black Knight (Vs. Klarion the Witch Boy)

Today would have been Jack Kirby's 99th Birthday.  I think my introduction to his work might have been the reprinted Marvel Superhero origin pages that would run in Dynamite Magazine.  Even back in the early 70's his art made an impression on me. My appreciation only grew decades later, when I saw his work in black and white, via the Marvel Essential TPB's - some of the early coloring really obscured his art.

Fantastic Four Vs. The Fatal Five

The Fatal Five was always one of the cooler and formidable villain teams of my youth.  Not only could they take on the Legion of Super-Heroes, they were all so creepy - The Emerald Empress had that big crazy floating eyeball that would follow her, Tharok was the first half man/half machine character that I had seen. Mano had the hidden face and The Persuader had his scary mask and giant axe.  Creepiest of all was Validus - a giant with no eyes and an exposed brain!  Great stuff!

The Question and The Shadow

I am pretty surprised that we have not seen The Question show up as a character on one of DC's TV shows.  Arrow has had a string of guest star street level heroes, and promises to add even more this season, but no word of Vic Sage joining in on the fun (or Renee Montoya, for that matter).  I wonder why because he seems like one of the easier characters to translate to live action.

Ms. Marvel and Wonder Woman

Brie Larson has been named as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, and I think that she will do a fine job in the role - I have always enjoyed her work and now she is an Oscar winner.  I had been thinking about Yvonne Strahovsky for the part, but she probably wasn't high profile enough for Marvel.  The Russo Brothers have hinted that Larson will show up in Avengers: Infinity War, so maybe we won't have to wait for her solo film before seeing her suit up.
