Batman and Star Trek
I was a fan of JJ Abrams' first Star Trek outing, I liked the timeline twisting plot and thought it had plenty of heart and action while staying true to the classic characters. I was really looking forward to the follow up, Star Trek Into Darkness, being a big Benedict Cumberbatch fan from his work on Sherlock. While there were some fun moments, the sequel was somewhat of a letdown due to the inexplicable decision to pay such heavy handed homage to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It seemed to me that the writers and director did not have enough confidence in themselves to come up with an original story and decided to just ape what worked before, and all it wound up doing was remind me of a better Star Trek movie. Bryan Singer's Superman Returns made a similar mistake in staying too close to the previous films in its franchise,
That is an awesome cover!
ReplyDeleteStar Trek Into Darkness was pretty near a remake of Wrath of Khan, almost a shot for shot remake with the twist.
I would have almost like to have seen an updating of Where No Man Has Gone Before and Gary Mitchell. That could have been cool.
I think there is a fan-film floating around YouTube of the '66 Batman series and Star Trek. It looke pretty cool...
I've seen that, fun stuff!
ReplyDeleteRoss-I wish they put you in charge of making movies-this would be so cool.
ReplyDeleteRoss, have you see the Green Lantern/Star Trek team-up mini-series ? Your mind will be blown clear to the moon.
ReplyDelete@Air Dave:
ReplyDeleteSorry, but I have to disagree with you on Star Trek Into Darkness: it was not a shot for shot remake of Wrath of Khan but a retelling of Space Seed with elements of the 1982 movie fused to make a new original story. Having a few bits like Spock yelling 'Khan! doesn't make it a shot for shot remake, but more of a homage.
Oh yeah, somebody came up with a similar idea to this comic book, but they made it into a movie:

@Lionel: must respectfully beg to permanently disagree. "...Into Darkness" (which should more accurately be called "The Wrath of Ret-Con") has about as much originality as a ton of bricks has subtlety.
ReplyDeleteEng. translation: none at all.
