Zatanna and Harry Potter

The Harry Potter films were fun, and I found that I enjoyed the later installments more than the earlier ones, as the kids grew older and the stakes got higher.  Now that the series is finally over though, there is a big hole in Warner Brother's event film schedule and plenty of money must be freed up as well.  I say now is the time for them to dive head forward into their DC Comics archives.  No more of this slow roll out, lets see some of those movies in development hell - Shazam, The Metal Men, JLA Dark - finally get rolling in addition to the build up to a Justice League film!

  1. This is a perfect cover for addressing your thoughts on Warner Brothers' Harry Potter/DC Comics matter. Doctor Fate might have been more to point than Zatanna, but Z is more appropriate story-wise because she (almost) dresses the part of a Hogwarts superior.

And, by the way, I happen to agree with you on what WB should do with the movie versions of popular DC characters. A new Superman just rolled out, Batman's about to... whither Wonder Woman? Those are DC's Big Three. Add a Flash movie, and there's enough for a full-on JLA movie in the form of what was done with the Avengers. Give Hal Jordan's Green Lantern another chance, and throw in Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter to round things out to the traditional seven.

The other films you mention (Shazam, Metal Men, JLA Dark) would be great to see too; I personally would very much look forward to a Metal Men film (I always had a particular fondness for Mercury, Lead, and Tin).

Story idea: team up the Metal Men with the X-Men as Magneto uses the former as a weapon against the latter.

  6. Nope, this is my only Potter cover so far - but that does seem like a natural pairing!

  8. It's such a shame that Rowling is so uber-protective of the Potter universe and characters. Can you imagine how much money and publicity a fully licensed Harry Potter comic book could make? It would surely generate more profit on its own than all DC's other titles and franchises put together, and could give the comic book industry an incredible boost overall.

It'll be fascinating to see what Disney and Marvel do with Star Wars (you have to think Dark Horse will lose the license eventually, especially as the new film draws closer). DC and Warner need to do SOMETHING to stand against the MarvelMouse juggernaut, and it's not like they're not flush for properties. If they've not got the confidence in Wonder Woman, so be it, but there's so much more they could exploit with a character like Zatanna at the top of the list.

Excellent cover, by the way, one of the best recently. It's VERY difficult NOT to have a gorgeous Zatanna image, but the whole thing with the cards and the shadowed Voldemort works perfectly. And congrats on your 1000!
